Sadly, this sense of humour is largely M.I.A. on Funhouse, an album that finds Pink struggling to come to terms with the end of her marriage. She's alternately defiant, desperate, tearful, sanguine and suicidal across these fourteen tracks - for every reflective moment like 'Crystal Ball', on which she claims she wouldn't "trade the pain for what she learned", there's a bonkers one like 'Funhouse', on which she threatens to torch the marital home.
Thanks to a reliable cast of collaborators, including Pink stalwarts Billy Mann, Butch Walker and Max Martin, the music is a good deal more consistent than the lyrics. The ballads, of which there are a few too many, are universally well-crafted, with 'Crystal Ball', a lovely acoustic number, and 'One Foot Wrong', a brassy, dramatic collaboration with English songwriter Eg White, probably the pick of the crop. Pink's vocals, meanwhile, are fantastic throughout.
Actually, Funhouse seems more ballad-heavy than it really is - partly because four of the first five tracks are slowies, and partly because the uptempo cuts that follow aren't exactly a barrel of laughs. 'Bad Influence' is a bit unhinged, 'Funhouse' finds her contemplating arson and 'It's All Your Fault', the nearest thing to a 'So What'-style stomper, features this cheery little couplet: "I would never pull the trigger, but I've cried wolf a thousand times."
Though it's far from a bad album, Funhouse lacks the range of Pink's best efforts. She's always been good at balancing the serious with the silly - her last album featured an open letter to George W. Bush and a song that advised lecherous clubbers to sod off and pleasure themselves. Sadly, Funhouse features more of the former than the latter, with light relief only really arriving on the UK bonus tracks. Then again, given the range of messy emotions Pink reveals in her lyrics, it's no surprise she doesn't want to get the party started.

Hell, as Pink goes this album is really not bad at all. I agree there are too many ballads. The first track "So What" is definitely a winner.

Oh it's fashionable to like Pink again even though she hasn't changed and still think she's a rocker when she's not

Putting this amazing album aside for a second, i would like to say was a brilliantly written review! Great writing style! I will certainly be looking out for more reviews by Nick Levine.

Excellent album. Clearly dealing with the breakup of her marriage but what else is she going to sing about. Classic songs ranging from despair to anger. I think that it is one of her best so far. Great voice too. Favourite songs are sober, please dont leave me and bad influence.

The featured review is absolutely appauling and unjust. Pink has delivered the most brilliant album yet in her career. True, the album is a clear refelction on her recent divorce but art imitates life. The lyrics are heartfelt and far better than the any of the other frivolous one hit wonders that stay on on the chart for a pathetic week and then frazzle into oblivion or better still, youtube! Pink keeps on rocking with this album and I give it 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up!!!

Pink have returned with a great album. A very solid ablum, with high standard on the songs. Best songs is in order: So what, Bad influence, It's all your fault, Funhouse, Please don't leave me, I don't believe you, Sober, Ave Mary A, Boring And Mean. The album is more solid then Im not dead - but IND had more "supergood" songs as U + Ur Hand, Cuz I Can, Who knew, Fingers And Dear mr President. Great lyrics, voice, production and melodys. I have wanted some more uptempo as "So What"..maybe next time! Anyway - great album!

Brill Album! Certainly different feel, yet songs still have feeling that can only come from Pink. Glad it's has made it her first uk number one. Well deserved.

While I agree that there are a few too many slow songs on this album it is still a great album. The stand out songs for me are So What, I Don't Believe You (a perfect slowie) and Mean, which has a country feel at first but then turns to classic Pink. Not as good as I'm Not Dead but not too far behind
