Hilary Duff: 'Best Of'
There's a certain type of "Hollywood stock" that follows a well-trodden career path. Like the Olsen Twins and Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff found fame and fortune appearing on children's television in the US. And like her peers, she grew up in a highly commercial environment where she was branded from a young age, earning major corporations a very large amount of money indeed. With acting roles, a clothing range and fragrances all under her belt, it's hard to view her music career without a certain amount of skepticism.

Although she's a household name in many corners of the world, Duff's pop career has never really taken off over here. She's netted the odd top 40 single, but never cracked the top five or come close to establishing herself as an "artist". Listening to her Best Of album, it's not hard to see why. In the six or so years she's been with Disney's Hollywood Records, her sound has changed as often as Posh Spice's hairstyle. One minute she's all sweet and innocent, the next she's an indie chick hanging out with Good Charlotte's Madden brothers, and then quick as a flash she's an electropop vamp.

Thankfully, her try-anything approach has paid the odd dividend. 'Stranger' pulls all the right strings with its swirling Indian vibes, while the indie-tinged 'Fly' could fit quite easily onto a Natalie Imbruglia record. The album's highlight is probably 'Dignity', a great piece of electropop that wasn't even released as a single, on which Duff takes a dig at Nicole Richie with some surprisingly scathing lyrics. "You'd show up to the opening of an envelope, why does everyone care about where you go?" Duff sings, "It's not news when you've got a new bag, it's not news when somebody slaps you." Who'd have thought she had it in her?

Despite the odd smattering of fun, the album's highs are vastly outnumbered by the lows. Any 'Best Of' compilation is bound to bounce around between genres, but when Duff jumps from the provocative and innuendo-laden 'Reach Out' to the twee and sweet 'Holiday', a track that's musically akin to S Club Juniors, the effect is beyond jarring. 'So Yesterday' and 'Wake Up' may have been her only UK top ten hits, but time has done them few favours, with both sounding tired tucked away at end of the album. Meanwhile, 'Why Not' hits a nerve with its mindlessly annoying chorus: "Why not take a crazy chance? Why not do a crazy dance? If you lose a moment you may lose a lot, so why not, why not?"

The US has produced some great female pop singers over the past ten years - Britney, Christina and more recently Lady GaGa – all of whom, for better of worse, have carved out a distinct identity. While there's no doubt that Duff has achieved a lot in her 21 years, her Best Of shows that she can't really be considered a proper popstar. Having been tweaked and tampered with to suit every passing fad, "Brand Duff" has ironed out any smattering of personality that would allow her to develop as an artist. What's left is a relatively uninteresting product that leaves you wondering, 'Who is the real Hilary Duff?'

I have to completely disagree with your review. When I was younger, I was Hilary Duff's BIGGEST FAN. Literally! I still have DVDs where they weren't officially released as films because they weren't deemed as box office sell - outs when actually they're touching and true to heart. Unless your a Hilary Duff fan, you probably haven't heard of 'Raise Your Voice'?!?! And it's the same for her music. I've managed to get hold of albums that were never officially released in the UK. She toured in the UK three or four years ago and although most of the audience was young, the arena was sold out! Hilary Duff may not be known to an older audience but her music isn't aimed at those kind of people. Yes some of her songs have been a bit cheesy but that's when she was part of Disney = speaks for itself. Songs like 'Fly' and 'Someone's Watching Over Me' bring me to tears because you can hear the emotion in her voice. She is a much better singler than Miley Cyrus who sounds like a cat screaming.

We think your review is crap. You better check new editors! Hilary Duff is the best popstar of our century; it's a shame you accepted such an article to be written. You are definetly cooperating with Hollywood Records. Let's wait for her new project to come out...

I have to disagree with so much that has been said. I think she's just grown up over the years (yes, years) which would be why her sound has changed. But there's nothing wrong with trying different things - and instead of making that a bad point, maybe it deserves some credit. She's been brave. I think a lot of the people you do consider "artists" could do with being a bit braver and release something that actually sounds different to their last work. She likes to keep things fresh and I respect her for it! Holiday is a really great song - it's nice that she did something a bit more poppy since her last album was so heavily dance. Yeah "Why Not" will be kiddy though won't it, I'm pretty sure that was for Lizzy Maguire... and her first release... so of course it'd be VERY Disney! And we all know how strict Disney are with these kids... they barely even let Vanessa and Zac is HSM kiss do they haha! They're like 20 or whatever for god sake! Maybe she wants to break away from those sorts of limitations, and I wouldn't blame her. Also it's worth pointing out that I don't think Hilary really wanted to release this Best Of CD. I heard somewhere that it was only to get out of her current deal, and she had to release one more album with them. Can't wait for what she comes out with next! I love that I have no idea what it will sound like either!! :D So nerr to you DS! Ha. x

thank u DS for actually producing a true review!! hilary duff, really does seem as if she's being carved into what others want from her!! there's nothing about what she's done or is doing that screams out that she's being herself! beacuse quite frankly, she isn't!! every album is a different music genre to the last, and why's that? because she's trying everything she can to get more publicity for her music! to be honest i don't even know why shes actually carrying on with her career in music, she can't even sing properly, you never hear her doing any backing vocals on her songs!! because her voice just isn't good enough, maybe thats why she isn't getting any recognition! and its alittle ironic that she's releasing a 'best of' album, when she doesn't have anything that could be considered 'best'!! i bet the most successful was only a top ten!! tell her to just be herself and then maybe she'll be more successful!!! p.s i think she's soooooooo annoying!! i can't stand her, cause it's soo obvious he isn't being herself! i rate this review at 5*, and her album at 0.5*!!

I totally think that Hilary Duff is a gifted person. Your review is total crap and I'm sorry about that but how can you say she's a part-time popstar when she's sold over 20 million records worldwide in a matter of six years?!? Hilary Duff is an overachiever and Hollywood Records want to forget about her because they consider her "a past prime". It's a shame, really.

There's no doubt that Hilary has done some good work in the States, and there's no doubt she's one of the hardest working popstars/filmstars/frangrancey-people in the business. But in the UK she's never taken off as an artist, and this Best Of just exaggerates that. She's a part-time popstar and has never really found her feet as a musician. This compilation just goes to show that. It's a shame that her label decided to put out a completely useless and frankly embarrassing 'Best Of' instead of some new material. Maybe in the States this album is brilliant, but here in the UK where we've never really "gotten to know" Hilary, it's a complete waste of time.

There are quite a few mistakes in your review. The most jarring - to use one of your own words - is having said that Hilary had been tweaked & tampered with to suit every passing fad. Had you done your research, you would have noticed that Hilary was one of the first to make teen pop/rock popular in the US. Her debut album introduced many after which includes: Lindsay Lohan & Ashlee Simpson. Kelly hadn't even started pop/rock by the time Hilary's sophomore album was released in the September of 2004. "Fly" didn't do well on the charts, & her label made the mistake of halting promotion on the album, RIGHT when pop/rock was becoming a bigger deal thanks to Kelly Clarkson's "Since You Been Gone" in Nov/Dec 2004. 2005 was a big year in pop/rock, but Hilary was already moving on when her label asked her to record a few songs for her first compilation album. "Wake Up," "Beat Of My Heart," & "Break My Heart," were not in the same veign of what was "in" at the moment. Following afterwards, in the summer of 2006, Hilary started doing more dance & electric music. In 2007, her album was released to generally favorable reviews, but flopped because that was not what was "in" at the moment. It wasn't until Rihanna released "Don't Stop The Music," that dance started becoming more popular in the US. Hilary FAR from followed any fads. She was truly underrated in the music that she made.

Duff's murder of the DM song is painful. however. "The US has produced some great female pop singers over the past ten years - Britney," yeah you were doing so well until the words "Britney" and "Spears". look please..she has roughly 6 memorable songs to Duff's 2. and do not start on the latest clone in the wig 'n spex - she will be history by 2010. these days, add water = instant hit. oh my. !!
