Madonna: 'Celebration'
Sigmund Freud, analyse this: "Unlike the others I'll do anything / I'm not the same, I've got no shame." It's a couplet from Madonna's 1982 single 'Burning Up', probably the most obscure selection on her new Greatest Hits compilation. At the time La Ciccone was singing about her desperate plight to win over an impassive male, but 27 years later it sounds like a snappy summary of her entire career.

She hasn't quite been prepared to do anything - though she did kiss a black Jesus, Britney and Guy Ritchie - but Celebration portrays Madonna as anything but chicken. The music here is pop at its most varied and adventurous, cherry-picking elements of house, disco, electronica, R&B, soul and 60s psychedelia while rarely forgetting the importance of a big fat hook. She may have a fondness for rhyming "wait" with "hesitate", but Madonna also scored massive hits singing about child abuse ('Live To Tell'), teen pregnancy ('Papa Don't Preach') and S&M ('Erotica').

What isn't here, of course, could fill another disc and then some. It's easy to quibble with Celebration's tracklisting - where are 'Deeper And Deeper' and 'True Blue'? What happened to the ballads? How the hell did 'Miles Away' make the grade? - but everything truly vital is included. Fans will sneer at some of the edits, and the sequencing isn't always spot on, but it's hard to feel short-changed by a 36-track compilation on which half the songs could legitimately be called iconic. How's this for an opening quintet: 'Hung Up', 'Music', 'Vogue', '4 Minutes', 'Holiday'?

It almost goes without saying that most of the tunes are brilliant. Pop doesn't get more thrilling than the choir breakdown in 'Like A Prayer', more provocative than the moment you think she's going to drop the F-bomb in 'Erotica', or more moving than the first minute of 'Frozen'. Perhaps unsurprisingly, in such exalted company the two new tracks don't exactly sparkle. The title track and single is a perfectly serviceable slab of dancefloor candy, but 'Revolver' is the creative nadir of this entire collection. Suffices to say that it features the line "I'm a sex pistol, my love should be illegal" and sounds like Madonna channelling recent Britney. Shouldn't it be the other way round?

Still, the odd slip-up aside, Celebration paints Madonna as one hell of a popstar - a singer who transcended her lack of technical ability to impose herself on virtually any song, a songwriter with a knack for an ear-snagging lyric ("Romeo and Juliet / They never felt this way I bet") and a pop brain with, until recently at least, a seemingly bottomless well of ideas. Sampling Abba, for example, may seem obvious, but who else thought to do it? As Celebration proves, Madonna has always been unlike the others - though it's much more than a lack of shame that sets her apart.

@ fkcadl. "Kylie going strong"? Where's that...cloud cuckooland? "All the Lovers" made #3, her last single flopped and the next uninspired pile of CACK will no doubt follow suit. The album has been reduced to less than a fiver and after all the promotion it STILL sold naff all compared to Madge. Take off those rose tinted specs and get some sense of perspective, please.

Madonna is past it, whilst Kylie is still going strong. Madonna tries too hard whilst Kylie doesnt have to. Both great artist though

Madonna to me is a major and a signifacant landmark in popular culture, she has sold an excess of 200million albums worldwide and a further 120million singles, she is the highest grossing female artisit on the planet and has inspired thousands of artists and her millions of dedicated fans, Celebration has sold almost 2 million worldwide already and took a week in the UK to be certified Gold by the BPI which is more than Whitney Houston which was only certified gold two weeks ago after three months of I Look To You being released! Madonna is one of the GREATS along with Michael Jackson, John Lennon and Elvis Presley and she is the fourth highest grossing artist behind these aforementioned musicians! after so many amazing albums and incredible songwriting all the songs here are welcome, althugh some favourites haven't yet made it(Deeper & Deeper/True Blue). thank you Madonna for three decades of inspirationally epic brilliance in music and here's to album #12!!

Yay Madonna! Yay Kylie! If y'all were resourceful, you would enter hyperlinks to the websites you're getting the statistics from. I've only seen two people do that. I do not believe that I have to prove Madonna the Queen, nor Kylie. However, I must point out that Madonna is more of a spectacle worldwide, and as a result she sells more albums and concert tickets. Yes, it's true everyone, Madonna sold more tickets with her Sticky & Sweet tour than Kylie did with her For You, For Me tour, which has now ended. Anyway, fighting over who is currently the official Queen of Pop is a pointless argument, because Beyonce has just been announced, following a poll, as the new Queen of Pop. I disagree. But whatever. Have fun replying with rude comments! References: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sticky_and_Sweet_Tour http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_You,_For_Me_Tour Regarding Celebration: I LOVE IT! Revolver is amazing--sorry people, but it is. She isn't chasing Britney or anything. She is just being herself, and, if you haven't noticed, that usually seems to work out quite well for her. FYI: I am a devout Madonna AND Kylie fan, along with others like Lady Gaga and Britney. Each artists constitutes their own type of rules, relevent to only THEIR music, making them each seem unique as musicians.

First the album, sheere brilliance.... ok so big hits are missing but folks, we have them already!!!! My only gripe is Gambler not being here, that song sold a respectable 198,756 copies in the UK and peeked at number 3, it should be here. As for True Blue, well, i remember the 7" single bearing a Remix Edit version totally different to the album version, it was cool and should have been included as a thankyou to fans, but folks this is Madonna and she aint stupid. Sometime from now when SHE decides to retire, these pop gems WILL be released and in all their digitally re-mastered glory. As a parting thankyou to her fans and Warners this compilation does pretty much what it says on the tin, Celebrates the greatest female entertainer alive today. Which brings me nicely to the faggots Matt and Kyliesrotten tiara, girls... Madonna has now sold 258,908,000 albums and over 124,000,000 singles. She is certified as not only the biggest selling female of all time but the most successful AND influential, why else would Kylie have plagiarised her ideas for the past 20 years? To remain current! It works for Madonna so it worked for her. Madonn has has 4 number 1 albums this decade 6 singles, Kylie has had 1 number 1 album and 3 number 1 singles. Her relavence is nowhere near that of Madonna's. She was around a longtime before Kylie and will remain so long after. Across Europe, Asia, north and south America and indeed Australia, Madonna has had more top 10 hits, more number 1 singles and albums and biggest sellout tours, she inspires EVERYONE from Kylie to Britney and Lady GaGa, Kylies tour concepts are taken from Madonna's earlier ideas like Blond Ambition and The Girly Show! William Baker cites Madonna as not only a great influencer on Kylie but inspiration for their own tour ideas and videos. Madonna is a genius on a par with Elvis and MJ, Kylie isnt even in the same league! The statistics speak for themselves, oh and by the way, Celebration both single and album has spent 6 weeks atop the Euro chart and has now sold over 5.4 million copies, thats before the Christmas rush. Get a life, stop convincing yourselves!

You read wrong, Madonna's Total sales exceed 200million. Celebration has shipped 2m and sold 1m. I noticed you tried to compare Kylie's Ultimate collection released in 2004, it has sold 3m and is compareable to Madonna's GHV2 released in 2001 with 7m sales. No matter how much you believe/want it to be true it doesn't make it true. PS If your so convinced Madonna is done for, why have you been stalking this review for two months? It's sad and pathetic, Kylie would hate to have you as a fan, she is full of class you are not.
Kylie's Sparkly Tiarra, on November 5th, 2009
Celebration may have shipped 200 million worldwide but it certainly hasn't sold that much, not even a million in fact. Kylie is the TRUE Queen Of Pop for ever and all eternity - and she can sing.

Madonna Celebration 5/5. In response to the Kylie being more successful, her last number 1 single 2003, number 1 album 2001. Madonna reached number 1 in singles & albums in 2008. Worl tour Kylie $70-85m, Madonna $408m Kylie album sales 40m singles 20m, Madonna 200m albums and 120m sinlges. Kylie number 1's in the 00's, singles 3 albums 2, Madonna singles 5 albums 5. Madonna more relevant that ever and her success unreachable.

How exactly has it flopped? "Celebration" sold 2 million in the first two weeks alone reaching number 1 in many countries. ...and let's not forget it wasn't released around the busy christmas period when Kylie released "Ultimate" - (Which may I remind you only reached number 4 in the uk). I expect sales of "Celebration" to sell many more copies when "Revolver" is released soon too. I wonder how pleased you'll be when Madonna's next album outsells Kylie's follow up to X-crement? No doubt delusional to say the least.

Just bought the best of today despite thinking I probably wouldn't bother as I have all the songs already on the original albums, but, I couldn't resist in the end. It will be on repeat for many weekends to come while I'm getting ready to head out! You Can Dance for inspiration....!

Lee, why would anyone in their right mind want to impersonate you? Call me Juvenille all you like, the fact is If I have a problem with people I come right out and say it to their face. One thing I DON'T do is hide behind someone else's name impersonating people. Whoever is rallying backwards and forwards using other peoples names is obvious getting the reaction they wanted. ...and if you look more closely at who started this whole argument you'll realise it wasn't me or the other Madonna fans it was "Kylie'sSparklytiarra". but I expect as he/she is a Kylie fan (like yourself) you'll choose to ignore that and bicker with the Madonna fans and THAT is what is truly sad and pathetic in my book.

Tom you really are very sad, but we already know that from your juvenile remarks and impersonating me which you have the cheek to accuse me of doing. I don't need to hide behind another name thanks, i'm grown up enough to put my own name on the comments i make. Play your silly little game with the other sad muppet if you want, i was given the impression this was a forum to make worthwhile comments on about various music items. Pity it has to brought down by very sad childish individuals who obviously have nothing better to do.

She ONLY shifted 1 million copies of Rhythm Of Love? I find that quite surprising considering she was pretty big back then. So Madonna sold 10 million more? Wow!!! So much for the "which sold the most" debate. lol
Gina, Durham, on October 9th, 2009
According to the link below the sales of "Rhythm Of Love" only equates to 1 million. lol http://www.slokylie.com/disc/albums/03-rol.html

Kylie's Sparkly Tiara, maybe you're right on the Rhythm of Love -v- Like a Prayer Album sales - how many copies did Kylie sell worldwide on that I know Madge was certified at 11million for that album? Both artists have had their highs and low's career wise and admire one another - if you remember Madonna wore a Kylie t-shirt at one of the MTV Awards Shows. Maybe you can be a bit more generous of spirit yourself?
