Paramore: 'Brand New Eyes'
Paramore recently broke from writing and recording their emotion-heavy rock tunes to officially state that they are not the "house band" for the Twilight franchise. You can understand their motivation. Frontwoman Hayley Williams may be a self-confessed fan of the series, but the last thing any serious band wants is to be forever aligned with a film phenomenon - and Paramore are nothing if not serious.

Nevertheless, the crossing of teen favourites Paramore with those infamous moody vamps will have got 10%-ers in business suits rubbing their hands with glee and mumbling scary words like "synergy", and the group have dutifully included soundtrack number 'Decode' as a bonus track on Brand New Eyes. However, it's to their credit that this epic backdrop to undead smooching is easily eclipsed - if you'll excuse the pun - by much of the music here.

The album's best tracks combine giant chords, loud drums and Williams's suitably piercing vocals with subject matter that's perfect for young adults struggling with the hardship of feeling ways about stuff. Lead single 'Ignorance', opener 'Careful', 'Feeling Sorry' and 'Where The Lines Overlap' are teeming with Smashing Pumpkins-lite intros and well-constructed, intertwining riffs, while their lyrics offer such pearls as "Your days are numbered at 24", "Ignorance is your new best friend" and, rather brilliantly, "You can't tell me to feel!".

The slower moments, somewhat inevitably, get your finger hovering over the skip key. The arpeggiated 'Misguided Ghosts' isn't too shabby perhaps, but 'The Only Exception' is a meandering yawn-fest, and 'All I Wanted' aims for Vegas torch song levels of grandeur but falls way, way short. Meanwhile, 'Turn It Off' and 'Looking Up' try valiantly but don't really distinguish themselves from the rest of the set.

Listeners past their teens (and especially those blessed with Y chromosomes) will be less likely to join the ranks who've catapulted Brand New Eyes to the top of the charts ahead of Madonna's 25 years of perfect pop. But that's as pointless and redundant an observation as commenting on the demographic of the people turning up to the Waltham Abbey vs. Hastings United match later this week. If you like your guitars loud and your popstars bursting with authentic - if somewhat overwrought - emotion, you won't find it done better than here.

I agree except that The Only Exception is a brilliant acoustic song. I would give 4/5

i LOVE 'the only exception' it's so moving and relatable, plus the reviewer could try to be so blatantly p****d off that mama-madonna got knocked off number 1 by paramore *yawn*

Great albums, the band have shown they can mature as a band and still make positive music. I mean if this album was another Riot!, it would be too much of the same, most of the songs are about growing up as a band and getting through tough times, which everyone can relate to in a way, and Ignorance & All I Wanted show glimpses of the old style of paramore, also showing their versatile. If you don't like this album it's because you are a pop/punk fanboy. Great, solid album.

One of the best albums released in a long time. And the 'Y chromosome' comment was especially uncalled for. Paramore release great music, who gives a damn who listens to their music or who their music is aimed towards.

As a MASSIVE Paramore fan, my view is probably extremely biased...nevertheless, I think this album is amazing. Hayley's vocals are great as usual, and every song on the album is relateable and brilliantly written. My favourites are 'Brick By Boring Brick,' 'Turn It Off' and the gorgeous 'The Only Exception.' I love the fact that they have some acoustic - style songs on there. I love it, and I can't wait for December 12th when I go to see them in Dublin!

Personally I think they have made a really good album - they've grown up and we would only whinge if they churned out another riot or all we know is falling - these are great albums too but I like how they've done something a bit different - cant wait to see them later this year

I personally love the album :) its not the best album they've done but its still really good! 'careful' is amazing as the reviewer so rightly said but i think 'turn it off' + 'misguided ghosts' are also amazing :D i dont think any of the songs beat some of the songs from riot! e.g. 'misery buisiness' 'crushcrushcrush' or my personal favourite 'fences' but still it deserves to be at number 1 and personally i think it deserves at least 4 stars :)

Hmmmm, I'm feeling bitterness from the reviewer here that Paramore rightfully kicked Madonna off the top spot! This is honestly there best album yet! I'm a guy and I have plenty of guy friends who have really got into Paramore too so your "Y chromosome comment" was particularly harsh!

Hayley's voice gets better and better with each album and my favourites from here are 'Turn It Off', 'Playing God' and 'All I Wanted' as these show that best. The fact that Mr Nissim called 'Misguided Ghosts' 'Misguided Voices' shows how much thought has gone into this review.

this album is truly brilliant and i know loads of boys and people past their teens who love it so i think you're completely unfairly stereotyping their fans!! also the songs called misguided ghosts not misguided voices, maybe if you had paid a bit more attention and been a bit more open minded you could of got the name right and understood how good this album is!!

Before you try to criticize these amazing songs, try to get the names right. "Misguided voices " is actually called "Misguided Ghosts". So try to actually listen to the album next time.

I love the album, especially Ignorance which is very catchy. Must admit though, prefer Riot!
