Capitalising on that success, the Barranquilla belter has recruited a team of top collaborators, including The Neptunes, Wyclef Jean and Amanda Ghost, for She Wolf, a genre-hopping carnival that's her most broadly commercial record to date. At just over 30 minutes in length, this is a bantamweight boxer of a pop album – a bit on the slight side, but there's barely an ounce of fat on it.
With its vampish beats, infectious "awhoo!"s and '70s disco guitars, lead single 'She Wolf' sets the pace, positioning Shakira at the quirky end of the dance-pop spectrum. Just as impressive are future single 'Did It Again', which boasts an infectious hook and marching band rhythms, and 'Why Wait', whose grinding synths and snappy couplets are almost as sexy as Shakira's hip-wiggling dance moves.
Elsewhere, she chucks in everything from country guitars on 'Gypsy' to Middle Eastern flourishes on 'Good Stuff' to a Michael Jackson-aping bassline on 'Spy'. However, it's not just Shakira's willingness to experiment that sets her apart, but her rather - how shall we put it? - unique lyrics. While nothing here matches "Lucky that my breasts are small and humble" for instant "WTF?!" value, it's certainly not for want of trying.
On 'Men In This Town', a song about living the single life in LA, she muses, "Matt Damon's not meant for me", before ominously predicting that "it's a suicide waiting, so decide..." Later, on the rocky 'Mon Amour', she shoots this zinger at an ex-boyfriend holidaying in Paris with his new squeeze: "I hope your room smells and your toilet doesn't flush." You'd never catch Kylie singing a line like that.
The one caveat? Some fans may be disappointed that She Wolf downplays Shakira's Latin-pop routes in favour of a sound that will appeal to radio playlisters the world over. However, her ability to mix this album's eclectic range of influences into a listenable, cohesive collection of songs should be ample compensation. Holding it all together, of course, is that distinctive voice. Who knew sounding a bit like a goat could be a good thing?

I'm loving this album, the main highlights for me are 'She Wolf', 'Did It Again' & 'Spy'. Keep it up Shakira - and I'm thrilled you went back to blonde! 5 Stars defo, I'd be a full to go lower...

What's so great about sexy Shakira is that she doesn't just have a great vocal, but she can also does a falsetto that's incredibly distinctive and sounds radio-friendly, fantastic and just . . . sexy. Absolutely adore her to bits!!!

absolute first class album from start to finish, one of the best i've bought all year. every song is superb - the production, the beats, styles, lyrics, and Shakira's voice all go together perfectly. There is no filler, every song shines. it's unlike anything else around and stands out in the best way. my faves, if i had to pick, are Did It Again and Men In This Town - which is a wicked dance tune. i also really like Gypsy which is the only real relaxed song. i still have slight reservations about Shakira's voice in English, but only on very few occasions on some of this album's songs - when compared to the Spanish versions. but that's who she is. singing in a different language can't be easy for anyone, especially with a voice as unique as Shakira's, and that's what sets her music style apart. but for me, an outstandingly good album. i'm very pleased indeed, because i have been anticipating this album for some time, and while i wasn't blown away by She Wolf the single, the album most definitely doesn't disappoint. Shakira shows once again why she is a real superstar!

A really brilliant album - her best yet by far. I agree there isn't enough of her Latin-ness coming through, but the fact each track is very much a Shakira production is probably enough. After a few listens, the synthy Men In This Town is the one I always come back to - hopefully a future single. She Wolf, Why Wait, Good Stuff and Spy run it a close second. The best thing? The fact no song sounds the same or sounds like anything around either - yet each still has a Shakira trademark stamped on it. Just a single downside though - only 9 original tracks on it when you take away the Spanish versions and remixes. Shame, but then I'd rather have quality rather than quantity - and quality this is!!

Shakira, Shakira! Love this album, much more than Laundry service, which I didn't expect. Really short at only 10 songs, one of which is a Spanish version of She Wolf, but with the exception of Why Wait, the album is perfect. Highlights include Men in this Town, Good Stuff and Mon Amour. This album really makes me smile :)
