Where her 2004 Best Of, My Prerogative, was let down by some needless inclusions, unsatisfying sequencing and under-written new material, the 18-track Singles Collection is as lean as the star herself after a couple of months on the road. Better still, it features the best singles from the Blackout and Circus albums, which salvaged Britney's career as a pop artist in the face of a personal breakdown. The only possible quibble is having newbie '3' tacked on the start rather than the end - ruining the otherwise chronological tracklisting - but in the grand scheme of things that matters not-a-jot.
Running from '...Baby One More Time' to 'Radar', you get a single-disc timeline that shows a progression in style and substance from school uniform-wearing pop ingénue to sultry motorik saucepot. There's an argument that the 65-minute run-time should have been extended to include a few more songs, but in the main it's the slowies that have been dropped, and that's no bad thing. Of course, there's little you can say about the songs themselves that hasn't already been said. Hits like 'Toxic' and 'Oops!... I Did It Again' proved their cultural cachet by featuring in Doctor Who and John & Edward's most magical moment respectively. Even the oft-forgotten 'Stronger' boasts two stone-cold classic pop moments: the lyrical inversion of her debut hit ("My loneliness ain't killing me no more") and that sound drop-out at two-and-a-half minutes that teases before the chorus slams back in.
Britney's voice has long been a source of contention, but while the debate about the value of a lip-synced live concert continues to rage, this compilation underlines her worth as a distinctive pop singer, at least on record. She certainly doesn't have the pipes of contemporaries Christina or Shakira, let alone the likes of Mariah or Whitney, but as last year's X Factor finalists showed, it's not as easy as it looks to make these songs sound as good as they do here.
And there's nothing that sounds out of place. The thematic muddle of wedging a coming-of-age ballad ('I'm Not A Girl...') between two slabs of sexed-up hip-pop ('Slave 4 U', 'Boys') looks dodgy on paper, but sounds perfect in the listening. Best of all is the double-header of 'Everytime' and 'Gimme More', where you get Brit's best ballad jammed up against a throbbing robopop thriller that's rightfully survived her infamous VMAs performance. The only arguable weak link is the Madonna-featuring 'Me Against The Music', but in this context what once looked like a respectful passing of the baton now seems like an unconditional surrender of pop Queendom to its rightful heir.

I love this review. I love all types of music and Britney is one of the few Pop artists that truly deserves the adoration she attracts. She has always topped the top artists when you think she has gone away forever. She will continue to reign as pop princess for decades to come.

for me Britney is a woman that is like no other, she is incomparable to any other popstar out there and this album reflects that while she has been around for a decade she can still leave fan's shortchanged by leaving such amazing songs as, Break The Ice and Overprotected!. Nevertheless, despite many fresh popstars pouring out from everywhere Britney Spears remains a name that remains untouched by comparison to any other and within a decade we have seen her grow into the amazingly strong woman she is today. Madonna is my inspiration, i grew up with her music, i love her image, her presence, all of her albums and...of course her video's...they are each one of a kind, and i have that connection with her and she is the undisputed and iconic Queen Of Pop! Michael Jackson remains an iconic man in image and performance and despite his tragic passing his music will still live on, he is for me The King Of Pop. what Britney has done so amazingly well is combine both and project it in such a stunningly beautiful way that makes me just love the woman! and although she has a more limited vocal range, she has adapted her voice and makes for a far pleasanter listen than the over belting by other contemporaries and her videos also remain distinctive and the lyrics to some of her songs are so touching that you feel a connection. due to these reasons she is in my top 5 favourite female musicians/performers of all time and in my top ten behind Madonna, Marvin Gaye,Michael Jackson and Fleetwood Mac :) Britney is an immortal performer and is back stronger than ever, also 3 is as catchy as ever although slightly underwhelming it is relentless fun that stands ahead of the likes of kesha's tik Tok and what have you? :) overall, lovely collection and an excellent summary of some of the best pop songs that came from the past ten years. here's to the next ten years Brit Brit!!!

All the hits on the CD are truly great! Toxic, Piece of me and Womanizer are my favourite. She just gets better and better! I realised that after first hearing Womanizer that Britney was back! 3 is awesome too!

The review is great. I have the box set and the whole package was awesome. But I have this one also. Britney is the best. For me it's more perfect if they did not omit any singles. But anyway it's still awesome. :)

Seems premature, but still its Britney, just like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Mariah etc. there will never be another of them. I cant think of another pop star that is a more naturally talented entertainer. All the more power to her. There are some songs that should not be in there (ie Radar, Boys) and some songs that should (overprotected) - which sums up what little gripes one can have about such a collection of great pop songs.

Break the Ice, probably one of Britney's best track, is missing. Though considering its chart performance due to her 'troubles' I have to reluctantly concede its absence. Otherwise a great anthology.

What a load of old regurgitated tosh - she had a GH album out like five minutes ago and she hasn't had any notable hits since then. The only think I agree with is that the Madonna duet is weak but Kylie is the real queen of pop and she ain't ready to pass it to someone as talentless as Britney just yet.

I totally agree with this review. Especially the part about "3" being placed first on the tracklist, ruining the perfect chronology of the songs. And YES to "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" looking weird on paper / tracklist but is actually okay in the listening part. I still think "Overprotected" is the one missing in this greatest hits list. I mean, it is one of her signature songs or if not, atleast it was attributed to the artist at the time of its release. It could replace "Boys" or "Radar." Nevertheless I'm still a Britney Mega Fan no matter what, so I think I'll just be happy with what she's giving us.

She mightn't be perfect and may mime all the time, but she is allowed to do it, as she is the woman who brought us some of the best pop songs of the past decade. Even though I own all her albums, I think I will buy the Singles Collection as a keepsake.

Awesome review. About Britney's voice... many people seem to be unaware that the nasal voice she uses is not actually her real voice. It's the voice her producers have asked her to do since her debut single to make her sound sexier - which it was, of course. Unfortunately, people never realized it was fake, and it stuck in the public consciousness ever since. Nonetheless, this is a damn fine collection of hits. One thing you notice: even when she begins to transition from bubblegum pop to hip-hop to electropop throughout the album, THE QUALITY IS STILL TOP-NOTCH. And that is why even after twelve years and counting, she's still on top.
