"What's the point in living if you don't wanna dance?" asks Kylie on one of the standout tracks from her new album. It's a quintessential Minogue lyric and one that neatly encapsulates the return to core values that is Aphrodite - the little Aussie pop rocket's eleventh studio set and her first since 2007's disappointing, disjointed and ultimately dismissed X.

Steps have been taken to ensure those first two dis(s)es don't apply here. Although Aphrodite features contributions from a veritable Brits afterparty of hitmaking talent - Calvin Harris, Jake Shears, Nerina Pallot, Tim Rice-Oxley, Starsmith, the list goes on - the album as a whole has been "executive produced" by Stuart Price, a man who could now cause a stampede at the bottom of Old Compton Street merely by letting his address book slip out of his pocket. The slew of co-writing, additional production and mixing credits he earns here are reflected in a record that benefits from a similar sense of sonic cohesion to 2001's Fever.

In fact, Aphrodite could almost be too cohesive, with several tracks seeming to disappear into one another on first listen. However, after a few plays distinguishing sonic details do begin to appear - the nods towards the RedOne sound on 'Get Outta My Way', the Italo disco-inspired chorus of 'Closer', the rock guitars that underpin 'Cupid Boy', the appropriately celestial synth strings of 'Looking For An Angel' - and standout tracks assert themselves.

And what gorgeous, glittery standouts they are. Harris's 'Too Much' goes off like firework over Sydney Opera House, 'Better Than Today' is as uplifting a dance-pop ditty as we're likely to hear all year, and next single 'Get Outta My Way' finds Minogue ditching her dullard boyfriend for the delights of the dancefloor. Toppermost of the poppermost is the brilliant title track. When Minogue sings, "I am the only one to make you feel this way," on the middle 8, it's difficult not to pump your fist in the air and shout, "Amen to that sista!" (Only Dannii is actually permitted to do so.)

This all adds up to an utterly charming, consistently danceable electro-disco album that's Minogue's best effort since, well, Fever. Deep? No way Andres, but Aphrodite sure ain't dumb either. It's a record to be played as the sun sets on a secluded Mediterranean beach with a cocktail in your hand, a bowl of olives at your fingertips and a lifetime's worth of wistful-yet-optimistic thoughts in your head. That it can evoke those feelings on a muggy morning in a sticky office backing onto the Oxford Street branch of Primark is a testament to its success - oh, and a little thing called The Kylie Effect, of course.

LMFAO @ Shaun - AKA - KST (I STILL CAN'T SPELL). Pull the other one, dear. The album is a total flop. Madonna on the other hand is getting her fans excited about some news in the pipeline. A new album perhaps?...a tour? Either way, whatever it is, Kylie (and her fans) will be left licking their wounds after the abysmal Aphros***e. Can't wait for Madonna(The QUEEN OF POP) to show you how it's done.

Does anybody even know who Kylie is anymore? and I think it's laughable how she is always compared to Madonna. Madonna is in the same league as Prince and MJ, for goodness sake. Kylie hasn't even reached it, and she's been releasing records since the late 80s along with them.

What an earth are this girl music ideas coming too! The performance on X-Factor on Sunday 7th November had me yawning like a lion!! Yet the silly tarty-Kylie tripped on stage with her tarty-rediculous high-heels!! "All the Lovers" was a disappointing song, where she sounded as though she sang it with her breathe! Mind you Kylie always sounds though she sings with her breathe anyway (FACT)!! The bestest bit of success that pleased me the most was "Outta' My Head" and we're talking 5, 6 years ago now aeren't we! Now her music is just a joke, nothing better, nothing more than!! Kylie Minogue is boring, the limelight for her is more about herself anyway. Most her songs just have a sexy undertone to them that just make her look as though she is asking for it!! This song is nothing brilliant and nothing has been accomplished - good luck for success Kylie, (NOT)!!

After the minor blip in my life where I must've been temporarily insane, I am now glad to say my niece has now dusted down my copy of "Aphros***e" and given it a space on her cd rack at home. It was destined for the bin anyway, but after my niece asked for it, I thought "Why not, I probably won't get a pittance for it anyway...especially now that's it's in the bargain bins everywhere". My niece offered me money for it but I refused. I thought she would pay the price later during the listening process. lol WORST ALBUM EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Pathetic? We're not the one's claiming "AphroS***E" has sold half a million. lol It's wonderful how her new single's bellyflopped into the wrong side of the top 10. Infact, for a woman that's just released a new single, the album is out of the top 40 and being reduced left, right and center. So much for SENSATIONAL album.

Oliver I am awate that just because a song foes not make it to number one, does not make it a terrible song, the reason why I was quoting numbers is that had you been on previous forums, you would have seen KST crowing about the fact that "All the Lovers" was a dead cert for number one. My opinion still remains that it is a terrible song.

How can anyone say Madonna is not relevant? In the last four years she has released two albums, had the most successful tour of any solo artist ever (grossed $400 million plus), been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and became the first artist to have an episode of Glee dedicated to her (will we see one dedicated to Kylie?). Can I also point that unlike All the Lovers, 4 minutes was released digitally four weeks before its physical release, and went to number one on digital sales only. She is also listed in the Guiness Book as the most successul female artist of all time, and is in the top 5 of the most successful artists in the UK (Kylie isnt even in the top 10). Cant Kylie fans just lover Kylie without trying to rip Madonna or other female artists apart? Madonna is relevant, will always be relevant (due to her musical achievements and legacy)and her sales and success will never be matched by any other female artist (even Gaga). Get over it Kylie fans. KST: I have a theory you are really a Madonna fan as you seem to always bring Madonna into it and people then jump to her defence and quote sales, achievements etc. Maybe that Madonna lyric applies to you "I only hurt the ones I love"?

I'm doing a U-turn on this and agree with Andy. Kylie has directly paid tribute to Madonna in the past and vice-versa. They clearly have a lot of respect for what the other does. I like all kinds of music, but the part of my heart dedicated to fun dance-pop will always belong to Kylie Minogue - and this album is a clear example of why. By the way Paul, by your reasoning below, any song that does not make no. 1 is terrible. If we're going purely on statistic reasoning, reaching no. 3 is still an achievement. All The Lovers can't be that terrible.
Kev, on August 5th, 2010
Get it right, Andy. It was the Kylie fans that started all that bulls**t. Not the Madonna fans.

Why is everyone trying to compare Madonna to Kylie? They manage to get along fine, so why is it all their bitchy little fans cant seem to get a grip? Some like Madge, some Kylie, some both, some neither. It's called musical taste. Calm down dears!
