The Saturdays, Headlines
"I'm doing nothing / 'Cause then at least I'm doing nothing wrong." A lyric which evidently doesn't describe The Saturdays' work ethic. Two albums, six top ten singles, their own TV show, book, jewellery line... it's all go for Una and co. Headlines! arrives just ten months after the group's second album, Wordshaker, failed to do the business sales-wise, despite peaking at a very respectable number nine on the charts. Abandoning their sophomore set, the ladies have instead opted to release this "mini-album" featuring tracks that they couldn't bear to hang onto for their next full-length long-player. Was it worth the effort? Hell yes!

Sitting next to Wordshaker singles 'Ego' and 'Forever Is Over' is the eight-track set's own trailer track, 'Missing You'. It's hard to knock a ballad with a dance routine and, after a few spins, its chorus implants itself in your brain no matter how much you claim to dislike it at first. However, as enjoyable as 'Missing You' is, after hearing several of the other newbies here it's tough not to wonder, 'Just who chooses this group's lead singles?'

So, what should have launched Headlines!? Well, that would be the group's recently confirmed next single. Move over 'Up', shift along 'Ego', for there's a new Sats classic in town. The synth-laden 'Higher' has become an instant fan fave following recent live performances and, with its infectious chorus and super-sassy lyrics, it's not hard to see why. Una Healy's middle 8 isn't quite as thrilling on record as it is on stage, but don't let the ill-advised use of Auto-Tune spoil this moment of close-to pop perfection.

Also nestling among the new tracks is 'Died In Your Eyes', a track originally recorded by US pop upstart Kristinia DeBarge. Though few are likely to realise that it's a cover - poor Kristinia! - it's a shame that one of Headlines!' five new songs turns out to be second-hand. That said, it's still a decent Tedderish pop ballad with lyrics that prove The Saturdays can "do" vulnerable when they want to.

Headlines! also features the deliciously dark 'Puppet' - present and future boyfriends, take note! - and 'Karma', which recalls the group's signature tune 'Up' in not unwelcome fashion. The package is completed by a new mix of Wordshaker standout 'One Shot' courtesy of trendy knob-twiddler Starsmith. Truth be told, it's not markedly different to the original, but its inclusion does at least remind you that this top notch pop stomper really should have been a single.

All in all, this mini-album falls a little short of pop gold status - there's the odd dodgy production choice, some even dodgier lyrics and the inclusion of fan-splitting single 'Forever Is Over' doesn't help - but the positives certainly outweigh the negatives. Grab-bag it may be, but Headlines! offers a tantalising glimpse of what to expect from the group's next album proper. Let's hope those impressive new songs serve as an advertisement to potential songwriting/production collaborators who've been too sniffy to return the group's calls in the past.

It isn't the best song they have released exacly, but I don't think personally that it's gonna' fail to impress. This new song least has a refreshing element, so it's good the music has been taken into consideration for the slight adjusting change.

Headlines! is pop brilliance, despite it only being a mini-album. From lead single Missing You to the remix of One Shot, a track off their second studio album, Wordshaker, Headlines! is something The Saturdays must be proud of her. There's been some debate over their single choices (especially the debate over "Missing You" and "Higher" being lead single), but they are both being released as singles, and Missing You is a pop gem, as well as the brilliant, sassy Higher. It's fantastic putting former singles Ego and Forever Is Over on this because they are brilliant songs. The new songs are brilliant, especially Died In Your Eyes, a Kristinia DeBarge cover that they handled very well. Karma is great electro-pop, and Puppet is fresh and despite some cliche lyrics, it's a fantastic track. Headlines is definitely the best EP ever. And it's definitely the best Saturdays album (even though it's a mini-album) It deserves every success!!!

Wasn't sure if this album was a good idea at first, but the tracks are good enough for this to do well. The band seem like lovely down to earth people with great work ethic so I hope it pays off for them and they get the chart positions they deserve.

I think The Sats are getting beter and better!! I love the idea of the mini-album and it looks like Headlines will sell better than CL and WS!!! OOO n i think theyll only release two singles from this album (Higher being the 2nd)) cant wait for next years!!

Lets get this out of the way now, I HATE the idea of having two songs that have already been released! HATE IT! But, I absolutely love the original songs on the album! Higher, Puppet and Karma stand out as the 3 best ones! and Karma has something very "Ego" about it, I think its the chorus but have a think for yourselves? Overall, a great little EP I suppose and good luck to the girls, I do like them and unlike most girl bands their "album tracks" aren't always complete filler, some nifty little tracks on their first 2 albums!

they were always going to get stick for releasing this mini album, but having heard the songs, they are all really, really good. I recently sent the link to a preview of their album, to a non saturdays fan, and they LOVE the new material, and have pre-ordered the album. It's really good. Karma and higher are too too good :):)

Well i think its safe to say this album is amazing. Much better then previous albums even if this is only a "Mini Album". Missing You = 5/5 Higher = 5/5 Died in Your Eyes = 5/5 Karma 5/5 Puppet 3/5

to claim that ur a fan and then say ur going to illegally download it baffles me.. i think this is great.. wordshaker wasnt exactly the best album 2 put it politely and ego, forever is over deserve 2 b put on a decent album.. all in all these girls can do no wrong.. there beautiful, good role models and something that seems 2 be rare these days "they can all actually sing" !! team SATS !!

I don't like the Mini Album concept, and there's no way I'm forking out for five new tracks especially after Missing You, even as a huge Sats fan. So hurrah for illegal downloads! Out of those four tracks, there's one brilliant one (Higher), one okay-ish one (Puppet), one meh-ish one (Died In Your Eyes), and one terrible one (Karma). Including the duds Missing You and FIO, and the brill Ego, it's very hit-and-miss. The Sats should have held off until the third album was finished, AND HIGHER SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEAD SINGLE!!
