Jordin Sparks: 'Jordin Sparks'
Because she's a wide-eyed, mighty-lunged innocent who won her nation's biggest reality show, it's tempting to compare Jordin Sparks, the youngest ever winner of American Idol, to our very own Leona. Sadly, Sparks doesn't quite have Lewis' buzz. Whereas the British girl began her pop odyssey with a bang, all smashed sales records and proclamations of greatness from Simon Cowell, Sparks got off to a rather more subdued start. In fact, her debut album has stalled at number ten on the US album chart – the worst ever performance from a reigning AmIdol champ.

This is a bit of a shame for Sparks, a sweet, likeable performer with a decent Mariah-style warble. Her self-titled debut is a valiant attempt to cover all the radio-friendly bases, with a small army of A-list producers (Annie Lennox collaborator Stephen Lipson, Norwegian hitmakers Stargate, Britney Spears knob-twiddlers Bloodshy & Avant and more) steering her from earnest soft rock to folky R&B to strutting electropop… and back again. Sadly, they don't always consider what suits Sparks' wholesome-as-apple-pie personality. That she's pictured in the CD booklet wearing a Mr. Happy T-shirt pretty much says it all.

When the hired hands deliver the R&B-flecked ballads that suit Sparks best, she sings them very well indeed. The likes of 'Next ToYou', 'One Step At A Time' and lead single 'Tattoo' aren't terribly exciting, but their glib, clichéd lyrics are enlivened by impassioned performances from the 18-year-old Arizona gal. Sparks does just as well on the rock-flavoured 'Permanent Monday' and the ludicrously overwrought 'God Loves Ugly', which, as its title suggests, is pretty much a retread of previous self-empowerment hits from TLC and Sugababes.

However, when Sparks' producers usher her towards the dancefloor, the results are awkward and slightly embarrassing. The sexually-charged robo-pop of 'Shy Boy' and 'Young And In Love', decent songs both, would sound fantastic on Britney Spears' Blackout album or Janet Jackson's recent Discipline collection, but Sparks is too much of a girl-next-door to play the vodka-swilling nymphette. When she sings: "You're messing with a tomboy, might just knock you out like a schoolboy" on 'Shy Boy', it's hard not to wonder whether June Whitfield would do a better job at sounding convincingly tough-yet-sexy.

All this adds up to an album that falls slap bang in the middle of tremendous and terrible - in other words, thoroughly OK. Fortunately, Sparks has an ace up her sleeve. 'No Air', the album's standout track, is an appealing melodramatic duet with Chris Brown that practically invents a sub-genre all of its own: the R&B power ballad. Already a smash across the pond, it should buy Sparks the chance to make a rather more focused album next time around.

leaona is better than jordin however i will admit that jordin could do better. no air and tatto r the only good tracks on the album. i do luv r'nb. but this ain't r'n'b. i've tried to like songs on her album but eventually i just had expected it was a no no for me!!! jordin nedds spice up her image and make herself more exciting than what she is now. i'm not shocked by this review at all and think her sophmorme album will be more of a break though for her.

I have albums that I like but don't respect and this is one of them. It drew me in unexpectedly and if I'm to be honest Jordin inspired very little resistance in me. I think I want to like this album. I listened to the middle of the album over and over again trying to like each and every song. The end I prefer to chop off altogether - some things you just can't like however hard you try. So with all the effort I put in I've forced myself into liking the album. Her vocals are nicey-nice and she goes up and down like every good diva should but her laughable non-existent work on her album makes me think twice (deja vu - Leona Lewis...!!!). All she does is sing and she lets others do all the hard work. I guess my praise still goes to Jordin though because I love her voice and she lifts the uninspired nothing-ish song lyrics a little above awful and you can, as I stand to prove, like mediocrity. "No Air" is the standout track and should get a quicker release. Other than that I'm too ashamed to say my favourite song because I'm the kind of person who lies there alone in my bedroom listening to the sounds of Sia and Robyn and Britney's new brazen-amazin' album. Ok, ok, so I can't justify why "Next To You" is my favourite. It just is. No, I lie, I can. I do actually fancy someone very hot and I pretend that she's him and he's singing about me and it's all very sexy and yeah, a little bit romantic I guess if you're that way inclined.

Really amazed at this review, don't let it put you off from getting the album. I got it and I have not stopped listening to it since. I would say shy boy and no air are the stand out tracks on the album

oh please jordin is quite refreshing compared to the other celebrites hollywood has offered. the song no air is not melodramatic, but one with depth that a person can only feel don't overthink the song but listen to the lyrics. jordin hasnt appeared to jump out of cars with their crotch showing and isnt being hauled off to rehab. jordin sparks will become more popular in the future give her time

Surprised this hasn't done very well, i imported it and listen all the time. On the UK iTunes it's been hanging around the top 90, maybe she should try and do some promo over here?
