McFly @ G-A-Y, July 22

Mm, McFly. It's not every day you get to see a group of sexy young men (without overly large muscles) take off all their clothes. In front of an audience of hundreds. Who had honestly believed that the promoter was having a laugh when he mentioned it near the beginning of the night. Apparently not.

Besides that rather interesting surprise, McFly's one-off gig at G-A-Y, situated within legendary venue The Astoria, was an example of everything a show should be - fast-paced, great audience, brilliant atmosphere, fantastic live playing and vocals. A very short set list of past hits 'Five Colours In Her Hair', 'Obviously', 'That Girl', 'Don't Stop Me Now', 'All About You' and 'Please Please' was supplemented by constant audience interaction with the heaving, sweaty crowd. Joint lead singer Danny Jones spent much of his time leaning over the mass of people, trying to get him to touch them whilst encouraging a sing along to new No1 'Don't Stop Me Now', which was, indeed, a cover of the Queen classic, done over for Sports Relief with a couple of typical McFly twists.

Despite the heat and emotion inherent to these crazed gigs, and ridiculous door policies laid on by G-A-Y promoter Jeremy Joseph, this late night gig (they came onstage at almost 2am) was still mightily fun. Seeing a band like McFly in such an intimate atmosphere as opposed to huge, teenie-filled, screaming stadiums was an experience never to be forgotten.
