Summer's here and for music fans that means only one thing: festivals, festivals and more festivals. Whether it's the muddy fields of Glastonbury, the fancy-dress shenanigans of Bestival or the cosy corporate hospitality of V, there's a festival to suit everyone's tastes.

But for bands, of course, festival season is the busiest and most important time of the year. With this in mind, we called Fyfe Dangerfield from Guillemots to find out how he's coping with all the portaloos and veggie falafel.

Have you got anything special planned for your live shows during festival season?
"We haven't really thought about it - we'll just play our songs. You know, when we play live it's not about being polished, it's about energy. It's nice playing festivals and trying to win people over, but often as soon as you try to impress people you generally don't. I don't think you should try too hard."

You're on the same bill as Morrissey at O2 Wireless this weekend. Any chance of a collaboration?
"I would definitely be up for it if he wanted to. I don't think that will happen, but hey!"

You could get him to play a triangle during your set.
"Oh yeah!"

He comes across as quite miserable in most interviews. Have you ever met him?
"I've never met him. I don't believe what anyone says about anyone in the press though, because it's always so inaccurate. I don't really know what he's like but I know he's done some great records."

Were you a regular festival-goer before you were in a band?
"I didn't go to loads, but that was because I didn't get around to organising it or saving up the money. I definitely think they're good things though."

Do you prefer ligging with the celebs backstage or watching the bands with the punters?
"I don't know really. When we're at a festival we're normally only there for a couple of days. I like both. It's nice to run into people from bands, but it's cool to go out and watch people as well. I slept in a tent at Glastonbury last year though - I kept it real!"

If you could only take one item to a festival, what would it be?
"A tiger to unleash on people who get in my way."

Sir Ian McKellen was in the video for your last single. How did that come about?
"One of his nephews was into the band and he met us through that. He came to a gig a while ago and we just stayed in touch really, so it just sorta happened. He was really laid back onset - no airs and graces about him at all. He's a lovely guy."

Was it weird hanging out with the bloke who played Gandalf?
"Yeah, I've seen the movies and he's a great actor, but he goes beyond just playing Gandalf. I saw him last year in King Lear and he has an amazing presence."

Is he on speed dial in your mobile now?
"Haha! Not quite yet!"

We chatted to your bandmate Arista earlier this year and she described you as "crazy" and a "genius". What do you make of that?
"I haven't got a clue. They're all words that don't mean anything. I don't know. It's all very flattering... but I don't really know. Music is something I'm very consumed by."

Would you be a bit lost without music?
"It is a massive... well it probably is the most important thing in my life. It's something I've done since I was tiny and I've never really known not having it around. It's just what I do."

You seem like quite a shy chap. Do you find it tough getting out onstage and singing your heart out?
"I don't feel uncomfortable with it. I enjoy being onstage. When I'm in the right mood I love it. It's weird because I've never really considered myself a singer and in that respect it's maybe a bit unusual. But it just came to a point where I couldn't be bothered to find someone else to sing my songs, so I just thought, 'I'll do it'."

Guillemots are performing at numerous festivals this summer, including O2 Wireless (July 4), T4 On The Beach (July 20) and V Festival (August 16, 17). Their album, Red, is out now.
