Move over Taylor Swift. And take that ruddy guitar with you. There's a new all-American teen in town and she's spreading a message of positivity and "no cussing". Alexis Jordan debuted at No.3 last month with 'Happiness', a simple love song that has more 'mmm' than the Bisto advert. With our pearly whites fully exposed, we called up the 18-year-old (an America's Got Talent alum, you know) to find out what's next.

'Happiness' was a big hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Are you surprised by its success?
"I'm actually really surprised because it was something we were just putting out there as a warm-up to the album. I'm very excited about its success and it's still going out there to different countries, so I'm very happy!"

Have you picked a second single yet?
"I've locked down my second single, which is called 'Good Girl', and I'm releasing it early next year. It's kind of more of a dance record and I'm really excited for it to come out."

What's the status of the album - have you finished it yet?
"It's finished and it's coming out early next year. Everyone's getting really excited and pumped up for it. It's going to be a great album with a universal sound."

Well yes - apparently you have reggae songs and country songs…
"There's lots of genres on the album. That's just me kind of not wanting to stay in a box."

You've said that your songs should have "no cussing". Is there too much profanity in music at the moment?
"I do think there's too much - people are just using too many cuss words. That's just me and my opinion of course. I can't really speak for anyone else."

You're on the same label as Willow. What do you make of her song and its success?
"I love her track! It's a great song, with a great meaning behind it, and I think a lot of girls like that positive-feeling music, so I'm really happy for her. I don't think there's any age in music, so it's really good that she's nine years old and doing what she loves."

You've covered a lot of British artists on your YouTube channel, including Cheryl Cole. How would she translate to the US?
"For me, I love her music in general and I hope she does do well in the States. You always wish the best for any artist out there. I've watched her on The X Factor and I think she's very sweet."

You made it through to the semi-finals on the first season of America's Got Talent. Did you ever consider trying out for American Idol after that?
"No, I didn't want to because I felt like America's Got Talent was enough exposure for me and I wanted to do it on my own after that. I feel like, if you've already been on TV, it does look a little desperate to keep on trying to do the same competition shows."

Have you been watching The X Factor while you're over here?
"I have been watching, yes! I really hope that One Direction win…"

I'm backing Cher.
"Really?! I think she's a good artist but I feel like One Direction have a better vibe when they're on stage. I'm actually flying home on Saturday so I'll miss the finale, but I'm going to be hooked on my computer to see who won. Mmm-hmm!"

Alexis Jordan's 'Happiness' is out now. Her debut album follows in early 2011.
