Question is, can he score a third with his latest chart botherer 'It Girl'? With said single out this week and his sophomore album Future History imminent, we caught up with him to find out whether he's suffering any last-minute release nerves.
We hear you bumped into Kelly Clarkson around London this week. What did you talk about?
"That was my first time meeting her. I told her I love her new single and she said she loved mine. We're in a similar position at the moment, having dropped new singles ahead of an album that's about to come out. I met her family and they were all really sweet!"
What's your favourite Kelly Clarkson song?
"'My Life Would Suck Without You' is definitely my favourite, but I think her new single is fantastic too."
You don't say your name tag on your new single 'It Girl'; is this the beginning of the end of it?
"The world may never know! It just has to feel right. Everything goes off feeling. There's no science behind it - if it doesn't feel right, we don't include it."
Were you worried about being reduced to a catchphrase?
"It wasn't really anything to do with it. People seem to really love it, but when I'm in a recording booth we just see what happens and how I feel about the song."
The album's lead single 'Don't Wanna Go Home' samples Robin S's 'Show Me Love'. Would you consider it the ultimate club classic?
"I would say it is! Top three at least anyway."
What else would be in your top three?
"'One More Time' by Daft Punk, and Soulja Boy's 'Tool Time'. I'm kidding about that one, of course!"
Has that particular genre inspired anything else on your album?
"I've been travelling the world and experiencing different places, and you always discover new things. There's a song on album called 'Breathing' where a lot of influences took part: African chants, Euro-dance, rock guitar and bits that you can't even hear on the finished version. That song means a lot to me as it's serious and heartfelt, but the melody is the exact opposite. It's about my cousin, who recently passed away."
It sounds like you've experienced a lot since your last album.
"It's amazing when you're playing to a crowd who barely understands English but they're singing parts of your song back to you. That's why there's more chanting on this album, it's something I discovered that everyone can relate to."
What's your favourite song on the album?
"It's hard to point out a favourite song because of the connection I have to each of them. There are bonus tracks on there that I think are incredible! In some ways the singles represent the album well because they're so different from each other, and the record's full of different songs. I mean, there's a song I wrote about a stalker on there."
Oh no! You have to tell us all the details now...
"It was very scary. It started out being what I thought was a one night stand, but it turned into something much different. It was partly my fault - I can't point all the blame to her."
One of our favourites on the album is 'Fight For You', which samples Toto's 'Africa'. Will it be a single?
"It's definitely a contender. I always let my fans choose, because I don't know what the hell I'd choose to release. My opinion feels invalid now - I didn't ever think 'It Girl' would be a single - but now I see that they were absolutely right to release it."
There are no collaborations on the album; was there anyone you wanted to work with?
"I did actually work with a bunch of people, but they didn't make the album. Not because they were bad songs, but because I had this perfect puzzle in my head of how I wanted the record to sound, and those songs didn't fit into it. I'm sure I'll release them soon, as people need to see me working with other artists."
Are you really giving up on music to be in films?
"That's not true at all. I don't think I can ever escape from music. People have jumped on that as I've said I want to get into movies after this album cycle. I'm going to do that, but I'm still going to put out music."
Have you ever watched an actor in a film and thought, 'That should have been me'?
"Haha! I don't think so, although I think Will Smith gets great roles - those sorts would be great. Hopefully I can have the same eye that he does for roles. You have to fit the part; it can't be contrived."
Do you have a dream role?
"I do, but I can't tell you about it otherwise someone will take the idea! I'll tell you after the interview."
Jason Derulo's 'It Girl' is out now. The album, Future History, follows on October 10.
