So in keeping with the festive spirit, they’re hoping that even the worst of Scrooges out there will buckle and buy the album, with all proceeds benefiting a combination of five different charities. If you still need convincing, then scroll down the page to check out their brand new video. But before then, check out our exclusive interview with Katie and Peter to find out more about their album, how life is like as a singing duo, and much more…
When was the first time you ever sang together?
Peter: First time we ever sang together was…
Katie: Probably the jungle. We all sang.
Peter: You mean officially right?
In private…
Katie: The jungle.
Peter: No, I think when we went to record ‘A Whole New World’ for our wedding.
Katie: No, we used to sing in the car.
Peter: Yeah, but…
Katie: I’d say the jungle.
And your first public performance was for Children in Need?
Katie: Yeah, last year.
You're kindly donating the whole proceeds from the Whole New World album to five charities. How did that come about?
Katie: When we did Children in Need last year [singing ‘A Whole New World’] they had such a big response after we went on it, made so much money and then we were inundated with calls saying you should release the song. We thought we’d do a Duets album and give the whole proceeds to charity.
When were you first approached with the offer of a record deal?
Katie: We’re doing it ourselves.
You’re financing it yourselves?
Katie: Yeah.
Peter: Us and our management are the record company.
Katie: We don’t need a record company at this moment.
Peter: Basically we’re funding it ourselves. We’re gonna prove to people that you can do it without the majors. We’re proving it right now by even the pre-sales.
If your new single ‘A Whole New World’ could keep any act off the top spot who would it be?
Peter: Well, we’re not competing with anyone because it’s a charity song.
Katie: The thing is, all the other people who are competing with us – they need to be charted well because that’s their only career. With us – singing is not our only career.
At the end of the day they’re all doing it for money for themselves. We’re doing it purely for charity. Obviously if we get to number one that means we’ve raised more money.
How did you select the tracks for the album?
Peter: We did market research. A lot of record companies do market research for their acts and we thought it would be a great idea. What you do is you do a survey. You ask people would you buy a Paris Hilton album, would you buy a Jordan album, would you buy a Katie Price album, would you buy a Peter Andre album etc. etc. When it came to ‘would you buy a Katie and Peter album?’ - 90% or more ticked ‘yes’. Then they said ‘if they did duets what would you choose?’ The eight top songs they chose were the ones that we put on this album. Then we wrote four originals.
Apart from ‘A Whole New World’ – what’s your favourite track on the album?
Katie: ‘Lullaby’, which is an original track, because it’s for the kids.
Peter: Mine’s ‘Tonight I Celebrate My Love’ because I’ve always loved it.
Was there ever a temptation to do the Kylie and Jason classic duet ‘Especially For You’?
Peter: They [the public] never asked us to do it.
It would have been a bit cheesy…
Katie: I think the songs we’ve done are credible ones anyway. Proper classics.
Does the track ‘I’ve Had The Time Of My Life’ remind you of a specific time in the past?
Peter: It reminds us all of that movie. Top Gun wasn’t it?
Dirty Dancing?
Peter: Dirty Dancing, sorry.
Katie: Top Gun!? Where did you get that from?
Peter: I tell you what was on Top Gun that we were going to do…
Katie: ‘Show Me Heaven’!
Peter: No…
That was Days of Thunder…
Katie: Yeah.
Peter: There was a song we were going to do… from A Few Good Men.
Katie: No.
You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling?’ from Top Gun?
Peter: That was another one we were going to do, yes.
Does the song ‘A Whole New World’ have any special memories?
Katie: Yeah, [Our son] Junior was born to that.
Peter: We heard it in the background.
Katie: When we watched the tape back it was in the background. That’s why it was our wedding song. I suppose out of the album that’s the most special one that has meaning to it.
Peter: The most sentimental.
You're now singing together, but if you could act together and play the leads in any film what would it be?
Peter: Grease.
Katie: Yeah, Grease.
Peter: I’d really do Grease, man. Danny and Sandy – I reckon that would be awesome!
Katie: I think that would suit me, Sandy, because she went from like a sweet girl to a glamour puss type thing. That’s probably like me. I’ve got the Katie Price side and I can glam up and be the Jordan.
Peter: I might not be as good looking as John Travolta, but I reckon I could give my own interpretation…
Peter - how does going out and promoting a record now compare to the old ‘Mysterious Girl’ and ‘Flava’ days?
Peter: It’s just different. There are two reasons why it’s different. One is that I’m doing it with someone else who has never done it before.
Katie: And you’re an adult now, not a kid.
Peter: No, that’s not the other reason. The other reason is because I’m doing something for charity so my whole way of promoting it is different. Back in the ‘Mysterious Girl’ days it was just complete hysteria. It was a whole different vibe, but it was great as well.
Katie, you've tried your hand at a lot of things…
Katie: And don’t fail either.
Peter: You cocky cow!
Katie: Well I am cocky ‘cos I work my ass off to make things work.
But out of everything you’ve done, if you had to pick one to focus on what would it be?
Katie: I think they’re all equal. There isn’t one because they’re all so different. I love doing the books, love doing the music – I’ve always wanted to do music. My whole dream was always to be a pop star or a model – I’ve done both. Now I do books, I’ve got my underwear range… everything I want, I’m doing. I’m just a very lucky girl.
Was there ever any fear of mixing business and pleasure as a couple?
Peter: We’ve been doing it since we’ve met.
Katie: Yeah.
Peter: We met doing ‘business’ in the jungle.
Katie: We don’t know any different.
As you say, you met on I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here. If you could play Cupid and matchmake any two people on there who would it be?
Katie: Myleene and Matt ‘cos they’re young.
Peter: I’d say David Gest and Jan Leeming. After last night, his kind of indecent proposal…
Katie: Myleene and Matt – that’s a realistic one.
Finally, what promotion do you have coming up for the single and album?
Katie: No days off. We’re promoting, promoting, promoting.
Peter: We want to shift albums. Every penny will go to the charities, so we want you all to go and buy this album.
Katie: Whatever it takes we are doing. Up and down the country, we’re doing gigs, doing signings, we’re doing everything we can. It can’t fail basically. It just can’t. An album – it’s money.
Peter: We feel we’ve won anyway because we’ve won for the charities just by doing it.
Thanks for chatting folks!
