Bajan quartet Cover Drive have had a whirlwind of a year. It was only 12 months ago that they unveiled their debut single 'Lick Ya Down', but they went on to claim a further two top five hits with 'Twilight' and 'Sparks'.
The band have now teamed up with N-Dubz star and general loose cannon Dappy for their new single 'Explode', so Digital Spy caught up with singer Amanda Reifer to chat about the collaboration.
Congratulations on the new single 'Explode'. Have you found the reaction to the track?
"It's actually been amazing. We love the track and the video has over a million views already and that's insane for us. We're very, very excited about it."
Dappy can be quite outrageous at times. Did you have to keep an eye on him when he was recording his bit?
"We sent him the song because the song is originally a song off our album, 'Explode', and we thought he'd sound great on it, so we weren't in the studio when he did it. He just sent it back to us and we loved what he did with it so we decided to make it a single. He was really professional and he appeared in the video, he made a cameo and that's when we saw him and he was really very talented. We didn't have any crazy moments with him. Everything went smoothly."
Are you nervous for the release, because your previous three singles have all charted top five, so you want to make it four in a row?
"Oh my gosh yeah, we're always nervous for releases, to be honest. Everything has gone so well so far and we're just happy with that. To have made it to a fourth single is crazy for us - we can't believe we even have a fourth single, so we're just excited for it to be happening. We'll just see how it goes, fingers crossed it does well and we're very excited about it."
Also congratulations on the success of 'Turn Up the Love' with Far East Movement. How did that come about?
"That was very random, actually. They were finishing off their album and they had this song and they're big fans of our music so they asked if we'd feature on it. It was a week before the album was due, so we did the song, so we thought it'd be great to bring our Bajan flavour and mix it with their dance. We'd never done a song before, so it was fun experimenting with that. We went to LA and shot the video with them, and those guys are really cool and very down to earth, so it was awesome."
Are they planning to release that in the US as well?
"Yeah, I think it is being released in the US, actually. I'm not sure when, but that would be a good entry into the States. That would be good."
We recently spoke to Jim Beanz and he told us he's worked on six new tracks with you. What can you tell us about those?
"Jim's great. We were very excited to work with him, he's amazing and so talented and he's been through a lot in the last year. He's had a lot to say and he's been getting very creative in the last few months, so we got in with him and we were just writing with him, and created like six ideas, and that ended up with us recording three of them. The songs are just different-sounding, they're very fresh, very current-sounding and they have something to say, so we're very excited about them."
We're looking forward to hearing some of that. What will that be on, will it be the next album or an expanded version of Bajan Style?
"We have no idea yet, to be honest. We just started writing because we have something to say now, so we'll see. It should hopefully be the second album, but we have no dates or anything yet. We're just writing music right now."
What we can expect from the second album from Cover Drive?
"You can expect a lot more maturity now. We've gone through so much, good and bad, and you know we have a lot to say and a lot to talk about, so I think you can expect a little bit of insight into our journey and what we've been going through."
Talking of US plans, are you heading there soon?
"We've been based in the UK for a long time, and things have been going great for us here and we couldn't have asked for anything better. But we want to take over the world with our music, really, so we've given notice on our flat in the UK because we're going to Barbados and hopefully over to the States as well. I can't tell you a date, but we know that plan's there."
Before you do that, you're touring with JLS and Kelly Clarkson, are you looking forward to that?
"Yeah the JLS dates start this coming Sunday so we're very excited about that. Those guys are hilarious and they're always fun. The Kelly Clarkson dates we are extremely excited about and especially being the main support it's incredible. We met her the other day and she's so down to earth, and we're huge fans of hers so it'll be great."
Are you hoping to jam out with her backstage?
"Jam out? Yeah definitely! We're going to be there with our instruments and be like 'Hey Kelly, wanna sing with us?' It's going to be really fun, I think."
