A*M*E interview: 'I call Gary Barlow Uncle G'

By
A*M*E

At just 17 years old, A*M*E has already achieved what millions attempt every year - to impress X Factor's head honcho Gary Barlow.

The Sierra Leone-born singer was promptly signed to his Future Records label last year, and from buzz tracks 'Find a Boy', 'Ride or Die' and new single 'Play the Game Boy' alone, we're already very excited for her debut album next year.

Digital Spy met up with the rising star to get ourselves better acquainted, find out what she loves so much about the '90s, and ask what it's like having Mr Barlow for a boss.

We love your new single 'Play the Game Boy' and so do lots of other people, which must be pleasing?
"It's been pretty phenomenal to be honest. I love the song because it has that whole '90s vibe, but I had no idea it would get such a strong reaction."

It's different from other tracks you've released online so far ('City Lights' and 'Find a Boy'). Do still feel like you're honing your sound or do you prefer to keep switching it up?
"I think it's a bit of both. There's a part of my sound I'm trying to make definite - it always has to be pop - but I want to be able to go dancey or synthy when the mood takes me. The key is that it always has to be pop."

You're a big K-pop fan; are you bringing it to the UK?
"I love my K-pop, but I haven't really done anything with that sound yet. There's influences from it in my music - I've got some fat, solid, six-part melodies which are very K-poppy."

Has Psy's 'Gangnam Style' brought K-pop to the UK?
"I feel like K-pop is coming to the UK, but I don't think that track is the correct way to label K-pop. Hopefully it's a gateway to everyone discovering it though!"

Gary Barlow tweeted about 'Play the Game Boy', but he's also your label boss, so was he just doing his job?
"He tweeted about it three times! He's been incredibly supportive and very involved in what I do. I had dinner with him the other day and he told me [puts on bad Gary Barlow accent], 'It's a very, very good track'. I was so pleased that Uncle G liked it!"

Does everyone on his label call him Uncle G?
"No, just me!"

He likes his ballads, so we were shocked to discover he likes this sort of music as well...
"I think he just appreciates good music. I think he wanted to tell people that he doesn't just listen to ballads!"

What were the initial meetings like with him?
"I met with Gary's team before meeting him and they told me they were interested in me. They put the deal on the table and that was it really. It was incredible - I've looked up to him since I was really young, so it was all very humbling! I remember singing along to his songs on my veranda."

What was life like before that?
"It all happened very quickly - I can't even remember things that happened last week at the moment! I guess I was just a normal teenager doing my GCSEs. My mate had a studio in his bedroom so I'd do some stuff there as well as small talent shows with my choir in the area. I feel like I had it quite easy compared to some people, as quite a few people were interested in my demos quite early on."

How's the album coming along?
"I think I'm about 90% there, but like every artist I'm going to keep writing until it's done. We've got enough good tracks to make the album but I want them all to be incredible tracks, so I'm going to keep working with producers as much as possible. I don't want anyone to skip a song on there!"

Who else would you like to work with?
"I'd love to get in with some K-pop producers and the band Big Bang - they're just incredible. I'd also love to work with Stargate, Lady GaGa, Nicki Minaj and Dr Luke. Oh, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis! Janet Jackson is my idol and I love all the tracks they worked on with her."

What three songs sum you up as an artist?
"Miami Sound Machine's 'Doctor Beat', Spice Girls' 'Wannabe' and Janet Jackson 'All For You'. It doesn't matter where I am or what I'm doing, if that Janet song comes on I will dance to it until the very end. Breakdown included!"

A*M*E releases 'Play the Game Boy' on November 4. Watch the official music video below:
