Kodaline interview: 'S**t just got real'

By
Kodaline

One act you may have noticed popping up on an array of 'ones to watch' lists for next year are Kodaline.

The Dublin-born quartet found success earlier this year when their track 'All I Want' caught the attention of BBC Radio 1 and Grey's Anatomy, leading its brilliant accompanying music video to gather over one million clicks on YouTube.

We caught up with Stephen Garrigan, Vinnie May Jr, Jason Boland and Mark Prendergast at the launch of MTV's Brand New for 2013 to find out how they're coping with their newfound fame.

You're officially on a lot of 'ones to watch' lists for next year. That's exciting, isn't it?
Steven: "It's great! It's an amazing feeling that people are getting behind you. We're all feeling pretty rough at the moment though, we've been playing a lot of gigs and doing a lot of celebrating."

You are playing a lot of gigs at the moment; are you taking care of yourselves?
Mark: "Not really. We played a show last night and it was one of our first London gigs, so there was a lot of label people there. We were given bottles of Jack Daniels as presents and we thought it'd be rude not drink it."
Steven: "We're Irish as well, we're not allowed to turn free drinks down."

Your song 'All I Want' seemed to take off all on its own to become a big success for a new act. Were you expecting that?
Steven: "We really weren't, but we're so pleased with how many people that song has reached."
Mark: "We didn't even plan on it being a proper single. We put it out there so we could play some gigs and try and get some support. Thankfully people seemed to like it."

A big part of the song's success seemed to be its music video. Are interesting clips something you're going to continue?
Steven: "Oh yeah. We just shot a video for our next single and it's looking amazing. We've found a director we love and he's going to be doing all our videos for the foreseeable future."

So he's sorted for a while then.
Steven: "He's really great. He dreams the whole story up and what he puts down on paper he brings to life almost exactly."

Your current track is 'The Answer'; what's the next single going to be?
Mark: "It's called 'High Hopes', from our EP The High Hopes, which is out in March next year".

You're nominated for the BBC Sound of 2013 and MTV's Brand New for 2013. Is it enough to be nominated, or do you secretly want to win?
Mark: "There's a winner?! I thought we just made a list. People don't tell me these things you seen."

Does that change things then?
Jason: "It certainly does! S**t just got real."

Kodaline's The High Hopes EP is out on March 11. Their debut album In a Perfect World follows on March 18.
