Former Big Brovaz members Cherise and Nadia surprised us back in 2007 with their debut album Boogie 2nite, which consisted mostly of unashamedly brilliant dancefloor-friendly covers.
After an extended break, Booty Luv release their new (original) single 'Black Widow' this week, marking their first release in nearly four years.
Digital Spy caught up with the duo to find out where they've been hiding, label politics and whether they'd consider reforming with their old group.
Hello Cherise and Nadia! How was your weekend?
Cherise: "Very good thanks! We were supposed be playing a gig in Russia this weekend but it got cancelled because of the snow out there. We love performing out there, but we're glad we're not the ones stuck in the snow."
Your new single 'Black Widow' is out this week. It's your first release since 2009. Where have you been?
Nadia: "I think a lot of people thought we fell off the face of the earth - like we've just been at home sitting down or something. We really haven't!"
To be honest, that's what we were thinking.
Cherise: "We've got new management now. It has taken us a while to get all the old label politics stuff out of the way, but the groundwork and boring paperwork is done. We've spent a lot of time in the studio as well."
Nadia: "We got about 60 songs done in all the time we've been away. We managed to creatively sort things and get some new material started. It's been good. We can't wait for the guys to hear it."
Now you're back, how does it feel to be promoting again?
Cherise: "There's really nothing like it. When you're in it you wish you had a day off, but there's no better feeling than being rushed off your feet. It's good to be busy."
Nadia: "We'd rather do this than be sitting wondering when we'll next be busy or be in a job we don't want to be in."
'Black Widow' is amazing. Who wrote and produced it?
Nadia: "Everyone is like, 'I don't understand it!' Cherise wrote the song when she was going through some crazy times. Production-wise, it was Ian Green. He did some stuff for Madonna's album last year before we started writing with him."
Is it about eating a previous lover then?
Cherise: "We're not that bad! Although we're pretty bad in the video..."
Nadia: "It shows our dark side. We haven't really done that yet, we're always like, 'Yeah woohoo party time!' Sometimes you want to address negative situations, but in a positive and fresh way. We aren't always party animals."
So what's it all about then?
Nadia: "I mean, how can I put it? There are women out there that we all know about, in our industry, that they act like black widows. They might approach somebody with a hidden agenda. Have we lost you yet?
We hear you loud and clear. You mentioned earlier that you've recorded 60(!) songs. Is there an album on the way soon?
Cherise: "Yeah, with the amount of songs we've got there will probably be about 4 albums!"
Nadia: "We recorded these songs ages ago. It's about having to go back to them and pick which songs can be more current and maybe change them up a bit. There are some really, really, good songs we recorded, but we're just focusing on promoting 'Black Widow' now, getting it out there and promoting it."
You both used to be in Big Brovaz. Have you heard about this ITV2 Big Reunion show?
So you haven't heard of it?
Nadia: "Yes we have, but no, we wouldn't have done it."
Cherise: "It's refreshing to see what's going on with those groups - it'll be interesting to hear them talk about those days."
Do you keep in touch with the rest of the group?
Nadia: "We only keep in contact and see Randy and J Rock every so often. I haven't spoken to the others in a while, but there's no malice there at all."
You have done some great covers of songs in the past; are there any songs out there at the moment you'd like to re-work?
Cherise: "Covers? No. We haven't tried any recently, although we're trying to select the right cover for a live show. I don't think we'll be releasing any more covers - from now it's important that it's all original material."
