Having written her first song aged 11 and signed a record deal at the age of 15, Tich has risen through the music industry the good ol'-fashioned way.

Digital Spy caught up with the rising starlet to chat about her debut single 'Dumb', her writing session with Nick Jonas and why Olly Murs's tour was the craziest she has been on.

Hi Tich! We're fans of your new single 'Dumb'; is it based on a real-life experience?
"Yeah, I broke up with my ex-boyfriend and the second I did it I was like, 'That was the stupidest thing I've ever done', and I guess I turned a negative experience into something which has turned out to be quite good."

Did you find it hard to admit to yourself that you had made a mistake?
"No. I knew it as soon as I did it. I just walked away and thought, 'You are possibly the stupidest person'. He just took it so well, everything was just perfect, even in that moment it was fine. I was like, 'Ohhhhh'."

Does he know the song is about him?
"No! No he doesn't. He really doesn't… do you know what, I'm sure he does. But I just don't think we'll ever discuss that situation."

Is it a good indication of what we can expect from you on your debut album?
"Yeah I think so. To be honest I think there's a few more moments like 'Dumb'. There's also a few quite deep moments in the album because I'm quite an emotional person and I need to channel that part of me as well, as well as the really fun crazy side. So I think it's definitely got a spectrum of emotion in it."

You've been working with Nick Jonas; what was that like?
"It was so fun. He's amazing. He is just really, really talented and we worked reasonably well together, which is just like one of my only love songs. I would love to work with him again, it was just such an amazing experience."

How did that come about?
"We randomly just got to work together in LA, but we just hanged out - we didn't really write anything. Then he asked to fly back over and write with me in London, so he came over and that's when we wrote 'Breathe In, Breathe Out'."

Were you a Jonas Brothers fan before the session?
"Yeah. I wouldn't say 'massive fan' but I absolutely loved what they did. I was so nervous I asked him if he had any brothers or sisters."

Oh dear! What did he say?
"He just looked at me, he didn't actually answer me. I was just like, 'Oh ha ha yes you do, remembered'."

You've supported lots of big acts including Olly Murs, JLS, Little Mix; have they given you any advice along the way?
"Yeah, it's always just 'love what you do', 'follow your gut instinct', 'be yourself'. To be honest the best advice they can give is via performing. I just watch them and I think it's incredible what they do and watching how their fans react to them is just really uplifting."

Who had the craziest tour?
"Olly. Nothing was crazy, it was just the craziest tour; the biggest venues and there were so many people. It was just a really friendly audience."

Olly began his career on The X Factor - was that a route you ever considered yourself?
"No I didn't, not because I wouldn't, but because of just the way it's been. I wrote my first song at 11 and the obvious thing for me to do personally was just to keep writing about how I felt and to keep gigging and just to perform.

"I always felt better performing and because I was 13 there was no Voice or, I just felt I was too young for X Factor, I just gigged. It really built a solid foundation for me which I could understand, I understood it, and I look at my fans and I see exactly how it's happened. It's been a very, very long journey in a way, but for me personally it's worked."

Where did the name Tich come from?
"Well when I was 9, I was basically the smallest person you'd ever meet. I'm still quite small but I have grown a bit. I just got called it as a nickname, it was quite 'mocky' at first and I wasn't quite sure if I liked it, it was spelt wrong, which also added to the confusion. As soon as the teachers started calling me Tich it was done, my name was Tich, that was it. I was no longer Rachel."

When we typed Tich into Wikipedia it came up with quite a few cricketer names…
"Really!? I typed it in once and it came up with a really scary-looking man who had like flippers on his feet and skis on his hands. That was enough for me. I stopped looking after that point."

Tich's debut single 'Dumb' will be available to download from May 12.
