Coldplay have denied lifting the melody for new track 'Viva La Vida' from a US indie band.

Brooklyn-based Creaky Boards recently posted a video on YouTube comparing Coldplay's album title track with their own 'The Songs I Didn't Write'.

The group claimed that Martin watched them perform at the CMJ festival in October last year: "We were flattered when we thought we saw Chris Martin in the crowd that night. He seemed pretty into it. Maybe too into it."

A spokesman for Coldplay told NME that the similarity was just a coincidence.

The band's representative said that the track 'Viva La Vida' was written and recorded as a demo in March 2007, seven months before Creaky Boards's CMJ show.

Martin's diary also revealed that the singer couldn't have attended a Creaky Boards gig in October 2007 because he was at London's AIR Studios.
