The Mail On Sunday's circulation has been put at 2.4 million for last weekend - the first time a big-name current pop band has distributed a record in such a way.
The Radio:ACTIVE promotion fell some way short of the 2.8 million copies sold when Prince's Planet Earth was given away last year.
However, MoS managing director Stephen Miron stated that he was "very pleased" with the figure.
"We have brought in a whole audience that would have never talked about the Mail On Sunday," he said.
