Michael Stipe has revealed that REM have no problem with being labelled "uncool".
The singer reportedly said that being unfashionable was one of the band's strengths.
"We are always going to be an imperfect, weird and geeky outfit," Stipe explained. "We were that way to begin with and, to a large degree, always will be. In fact, that may be one of our strengths. Hard as we may try to make something supercool, it's just not going to happen."
Stipe added that he envied his bandmates Peter Buck and Mike Mills because they were even nerdier than him.
"Both Mike and Peter are much smarter than I am and better read. I'm jealous of that," he said.
'Man-Sized Wreath', the third single from REM's Accelerate LP, is scheduled for release on August 25.
