REM have been forced to move their gig at Cardiff's Millenium Stadium to a smaller venue due to poor ticket sales.

The band, who sold out the arena in 2005, have only managed to sell 18,000 tickets of the venue's 35,000-capacity setup.

The August 25 show has been moved from the stadium to the Cardiff International Arena. Tickets already purchased are still valid, though fans have been offered a refund or discounts for other REM shows at Twickenham and Southampton.

The group's European manager Bob Gold told the BBC that the Cardiff gig would benefit from "a smaller, more intimate venue" and sales for the other shows were "satisfactory".

He claimed that the current economic slump had contributed to the lack of interest in the concert.
