Britney Spears to open VMAs
Britney Spears is to open the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

MTV Networks Music Group president Van Toffler confirmed that the singer will do something "fun and unexpected" to launch the show.

Spears said in a statement: "MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated."

Her manager recently denied claims that the popstar will perform at the event to make up for her disastrous comeback last year.

Talking about the decision to have her open the show instead, Toffler said: "I think for Britney, people are rooting for her and she's really on the road to recovery. It feels like it's her year. It's our 25th anniversary of the VMAs and she's been such a critical piece of MTV's history."

Toffler also claimed that producers are attempting to persuade Michael Jackson to make an appearance, saying: "We've been talking to him as well, I don't know if that's going to happen. People fall in and fall out up until the day of the show."

Spears has been nominated in the Best Female category, while the clip for her track 'Piece Of Me' is up for the Best Pop Video award.
