Elbow beat Radiohead, Adele to Mercury Prize
Published Tuesday, Sep 9 2008, 22:48 BST | By Nick Levine

The band's fourth album, The Seldom Seen Kid, beat off stiff competition from Radiohead, Adele and Estelle to take home the prestigious award.
Upon collecting the prize and a cheque for £20,000, frontman Guy Garvey said: "This is quite literally the best thing that's ever happened to us."
Earlier in the evening the band had performed a track from the winning album called 'The Loneliness Of A Tower Crane Driver'. Other acts performing at the event, which was held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel, included fellow nominees Adele, Estelle and the Last Shadow Puppets.
Previous winners of the Nationwide Mercury Prize, which is voted for by a panel of music industry executives and experts, include Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand and Pulp.
