Chubby Checker's 1960 track 'The Twist' has been named by Billboard as the US's most popular single.
"I'm glad they've finally recognised it," Checker said to the Associated Press.
He added: "Anyplace on the planet, when someone has a song that has a beat, they're on the floor dancing apart to the beat, and before Chubby Checker, it wasn't here, and I think that has a lot to do with me being on the charts."
The song held off competition from Santana's 'Smooth' and Bobby Darin's 'Mack The Knife' to secure the number one spot. 'How Do I Live' by LeAnn Rimes and 'Macarena' by Los Del Rio round out the top five.
The Beatles' 'Hey Jude' landed at number eight, while the highest-ranked Elvis Presley track was 'Are You Lonesome Tonight?', which came in at number 81.
