The soul singer, 68, took to the stage in front of 18,000 fans at Kansas City's Sprint Centre on Wednesday night.
She insisted that her age would not impede her performance, saying: "I can still do it. [I'm] still in shape enough physically, mentally and I think this was about the best time to do it."
The Grammy-winning star performed a selection of hits from her 50-year career, including 'What's Love Got To Do With It?', 'Goldeneye' and 'River Deep - Mountain High'.
She will now play 35 further dates across North America before touring Europe early next year.
