The band are expected to release the new material, which is rumoured to have the title Prospekts March, at Christmas.
Speaking at the Q Awards, Martin told DS: "It's not an album, but we're about to release something that's a bit odd.
"It's an EP but it will be attached to another album. We've just got lots and lots of songs that we like."
He continued: "They are songs that we didn't have finished in time [for our last album]. It's like we are back in school and we have unfinished homework we still haven't handed in."
When asked whether the band are excited about releasing songs so soon after their Viva La Vida album, he said: "We love the whole process of everything.
"We even like this [red carpet] process. I like the process of getting in a bath. Any process is fine by me."
