The former Roxy Music singer joins stars including Ray Davies, Peter Gabriel and Van Morrison in picking up the BMI Icon gong.
The award, which celebrates artists who have had "a unique and indelible influence" on music, was presented at a ceremony in London on Tuesday.
BMI president and CEO Del Bryant called Ferry "the epitome of Britishness and the ultimate combination of rock god and matinee idol".
Ferry said: "I'm very honoured to be part of your tradition of music because there are so many artists you have represented who are great idols for me throughout my career."
