The album becomes the band's seventh to reach number one, maintaining their record of topping the charts with every studio LP they have released.
Last week's number one, Only By The Night by Kings of Leon, slips to two, while Will Young's Let It Go falls a place to three.
The only other new entry in the top ten comes from Bob Dylan, who bows at nine with the eighth volume of his Bootleg series of rare and unissued recordings.
