The 54-year-old will receive an Honorary Doctorate in Music from the University of East London, ITN reports.
Organisers said the award recognises his "unique success in harnessing the power of popular music to raise funds and awareness of key global issues, and changing the lives of people worldwide".
The Irish musician will be bestowed with the honour at a ceremony at London's Barbican Centre.
