The 36-year-old told the BBC that the Los Angeles night classes left her "fired" and ready for work in the studio.
"I just wanted to use my brain," she disclosed, speaking ahead of next month's release of her third studio album Safe Trip Home.
"I went to study some orchestration stuff because I got so inspired working with all the orchestras.
"I would go off a couple of evenings a week and come back to the studio completely fired and with my brain in a completely different place."
Dido's first two albums, 1999's No Angel and 2003's Life For Rent, have sold nearly 22 million copies worldwide. A track from her latest work entitled 'Look No Further' has been made available on the singer's official website ahead of the November 3 launch.
