Robert Smith's post-punk band will be honoured at the Brixton Academy on February 25. Previous acts to win the title include Manic Street Preachers, New Order, The Clash and Ozzy Osbourne.
"For 30 years The Cure have been both uncompromising and hugely successful," said NME editor Conor McNichols. "They are the beating heart of indie music, having penned some of the darkest albums and most sparkling British pop of their era.
"To still be a massive draw 30 years after you formed is a preserve of a select few bands. For all these reasons The Cure need to be recognised."
The Cure pioneered Gothic and alternative rock following their formation in 1976. They have released 12 studio albums, which have sold over 27 million records worldwide.
Their hits include 'Boys Don't Cry', 'The Lovecats', 'Friday I'm In Love' and 'Why Can't I Be You?'.
