Grainge was presented with a Music Industry Trust Award at a special ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. U2 were guests of honour and handed over the gong to the man known for being behind many of today's top acts.
Take That, Girls Aloud, Mika and X Factor judge Simon Cowell were among stars who gathered to watch the Universal Music Group international chairman and CEO receive the award, reports ITN.
Grainge said: "This recognition is an honour, and I'm delighted to be able to share it with the many artists, colleagues and friends who have been at the centre of my professional and personal life for the past 30 years. I'm proud that music is the only industry I have ever worked in. Music has given me opportunity and fulfilment beyond measure, and I'm grateful for that."
The event included performances by Snow Patrol, Razorlight, Mika and Take That, while filmed tributes to Grainge were made by Mariah Carey, the Pussycat Dolls, Michael Winner, Elton John, Bob Geldof and U2 manager Paul McGuinness.
