The singer said the mixed response to Slipway Fires is a result of the image the media has created of him.
"I’m not happy with the reviews on the whole because I don’t think people have given the album a chance," he told the Daily Star.
"A couple sounded like they hadn’t even bothered listening to it."
Borrell suggested that some of the negative reviews are the result of a public backlash, saying: “If I go to a gig and see a band I don’t like, at least I can be objective, but it seems people want to believe the crap that’s written about me. But the haters aren’t going to win."
He added: "All I want to do is give the fans a great album. What we’ve recorded is an honest album with no preconceptions. I believe it will resonate in time."
The band released Slipway Fires on November 3.
