The singer will perform 'The Red Piano' show with his band at London's 02 Arena.
"I can't wait to spend New Year's Eve with 17,000 of my biggest fans. I cant think of a better way to see in 2009," Sir Elton said on his website.
Sir Elton has been performing his 'Red Piano' show in Las Vegas since 2004. The London date will be the final concert of the 2008 European leg of the tour.
"I've seen the set list for New Year Eve and this is absolutely going to be one massive party. The O2 is the world's most popular music venue, and for New Year's Eve we have always wanted the best celebration anywhere," said David Campbell, chief executive of promoter AEG Europe.
"What more could you ask for than Elton John to kick off 2009 in style? In difficult times this will be a night to remember. Thanks Elton."
The musician follows in the footsteps of Take That, who performed at London's 02 area last New Year's Eve.
