Chris Martin: 'Coldplay are not the best'

Rex Features

Chris Martin has claimed that Coldplay are only being praised by critics because the best bands are "on holiday".

The frontman said his group only won awards such as Q magazine's Best Band In The World gong because U2 and Green Day are currently busy in the studio.

"The reason we're the biggest band in the world at the moment is because the others are on holiday," he is quoted as saying.

"That's how you get your breaks. That's how the understudy gets his opportunity. While U2 and Green Day are away, we've gotten to make the most of it."

U2 and Green Day are scheduled to release to new LPs in 2009.
