Flowers told the Daily Star that he didn't believe his facial hair suited the band's new album Day & Age.
"I decided that the person who sang these songs didn't wear a moustache," he said.
Drummer Ronnie Vannucci confessed that he was initially sceptical about hiring producer Madonna's producer Stuart Price to oversee their new record, but was surprised by the results.
"I was like: 'Oh f**k, it's all gonna be programmed beats and stuff,' but he was like the antithesis of the electronic rock dude - he loves organic instruments."
Flowers added: "There's something cosmic and galactic about what [Price] does, I think."
