The Performing Rights Society, which collects royalties for musicians, said the 1984 hit took first place over Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas'.
The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl came third with 'Fairytale Of New York', while Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' finished fourth, reports the BBC.
Also featuring in the top ten were 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' by Bruce Springsteen, Jona Lewie's 'Stop The Cavalry', Wizzard's 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday', 'Merry Xmas Everybody' by Slade, 'Lonely This Christmas' by Mud, and Bing Crosby's 'White Christmas'.
