Mark Owen told TV Times that the group were inspired to name their work The Circus after watching the Cirque Du Soleil perform in Las Vegas.
He revealed that learning that Spears's comeback release was called Circus was a bitter blow, saying: "When I heard about Britney, it ruined it for me, to a point.
"We actually considered renaming the album but that wouldn't have worked either. The title simply fits the record and, besides, the artwork was already finished."
With both LPs released on the same day, Take That are currently outselling the pop princess's release by a significant margin.
Owen said he wished Spears success with the album, adding: "If only she'd given it another name."
