Lightbody told the Daily Record that the X Factor winner will be "the next Whitney Houston".
"She obviously studied the song and thought long and hard about how it interpret it," he said. "She's stripped it to its bare core. I think she sounds absolutely phenomenal.
"I'm not a big fan of shows like The X Factor, but when talent comes along, I can't slate it."
Lewis first performed the cover on Radio 1's Live Lounge in 2007. The single knocked Take That off the number one spot in this week's UK chart.
