The Sheffield band, who recorded part of the album in California with Josh Homme, will apparently showcase new songs at a gig in Wellington on January 13.
"It was supposed to be a secret. The lucky few fans in Wellington were going to arrive thinking they were attending a little warm-up gig," a source told The Sun
"But, in fact, they will be the first to hear the new album. The lads have basically finished it. They just need to return to the studio to apply some finishing touches early next year."
The follow-up to 2007's Favourite Worst Nightmare is expected to be released at some point next year.
Drummer Matt Helders previously revealed that the new material sounds more "aggressive" and features a "spaghetti western" influence.
