The group played their final gig together on December 20 after announcing their plans to split up.
"I do have regrets," Barat told NME. "I have to refer you to Max Weber and functionalism - democracy can’t always work. I was a bit idealistic. I wanted a band of brothers and friends."
The group formed in 2004 after the break-up of Barat's old group The Libertines and consisted of drummer Gary Powell, guitarist Anthony Rossomando and bassist Didz Hammond
"We had that for a while. Occasionally things went awry. Our hearts were always in the same place. We were all very young in different ways," he continued.
"I do have regrets, but I wouldn’t change anything. The day the expectation and the regimentation of the band died was the day we became friends again.
The group's most recent album Romance At Short Notice reached number 35 when it was released in June.
