The group have revealed that they are taking their time working on the follow-up to 2007's Neon Bible.
"It’s been really rewarding over the last couple months to not have to be like, 'OK guys, we're gonna make a new record, it's gonna take six months, we're recording in this studio'," Butler told Pitchfork.
"It's like, 'We have no idea what we're doing, but I feel like playing with you this afternoon, so how about we have some tea and play songs for a little bit.'"
Butler added that he is keen to avoid the three-year hiatus between the release of the group's debut album Funeral in 2004 and its follow-up.
"I mean, I don’t think any of us want to spend three years making a new record. But after the last five years, I think it’s been super healthy for us to just stay at home, tend our gardens, and actually have a real life… I think we're all really excited."
The group's 2007 album Neon Bible topped the Canadian and Irish album charts and made it to number two in the UK and US.
