The popstar, who was dropped from two different labels before scoring a breakthrough hit with 'I Kissed A Girl', admitted that the music industry attempted to mould her in Lavigne's image early in her career.
"When I first started at 17, the hit song was 'Complicated' and everyone wanted me to write a 'Complicated'," she told The AP.
Perry added that snubbing the requests allowed her to cultivate her own image and her career promptly took off.
"I said, 'Look, that's her and this is me. Everybody loves her song and hopefully everyone will like mine'."
