The Scottish group fought off competition from the Ting Tings and The Courteeners to win the gong for their first release.
Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, Gavin And Stacey actor Mathew Horne and Radiohead producer John Leckie were among judges who whittled down the list of 49 albums, giving the station's listeners the vote on the final ten.
"It's a first class debut album in that it is memorable, passionate and well formed," Leckie told the BBC.
"Every track is a winner, leaves you wanting more and wondering what will come next. I wish I'd produced it."
The album reached number two in September 2008.
Last year's award was won by The Enemy for their first LP 'We'll Live And Die In These Towns'.
