A commemorative concert was held at the site of the singer's last concert and tributes have poured in from newspapers and musicians around the world.
Holly died on February 3, 1959, at the age of just 22 in a plane crash over Iowa. Fellow musicians J.P 'The Big Bopper' Richardson, 28, and Ritchie Valens, 17, were also killed.
Their deaths have since been immortalised as "the day the music died" in the Don McClean song 'American Pie'.
The trio had just played at Iowa's Surf Ballroom, where a tribute concert was held last night featuring acts such as Graham Nash and Los Lobos.
Holly’s widow Maria Elena attended the evening, which ended with the Holly song 'Don’t Fade Away'.
