The '80s star was announced as the winner of the gong at the ceremony in Liverpool in November.
"The MTV music awards were a bit daft," he told GMTV. "I think they thought it was ironic and funny to put me in that category, and the public thought it would be ironic and funny to vote for me."
The 'Never Gonna Give You Up' singer went on to explain why he refused to collect the award in person.
"It would have been ridiculous for me to get up and accept that award because Bono was there giving Sir Paul McCartney his Lifetime Achievement Award and everything," he said.
Astley is currently writing the script for a musical that he hopes will be made into a Hollywood movie.
