The Cure's lead singer told The Times that the record will be a darker sequel to the relatively upbeat 4:13 Dream.
Smith said: "It's the companion piece, the nightmare piece to the dream thing.
"4:13 Dream ends on a dark minor chord and I feel like there's an intermission and everyone goes out and goes: 'Ooh, I wonder what's going to happen next.'
"The next one picks up where the last one ended."
He added that he hopes the album will be released later this year.
The Cure will headline the NME Awards 'Big Gig' on February 26 after picking up the 'Godlike Geniuses' prize the previous day.
