Coldplay and Madonna have been snubbed by MTV in their search to find the greatest ever album.

A vote launched this week to find the Top 10 best albums across the network's three UK channels has drawn criticism over the acts nominated.

A panel of music industry experts compiled a shortlist of albums which will be opened up to the public vote on MTV2, VH1 and MTV Base. Each channel will then compile a Top 10.

"Myself and MTV Base's Trevor Nelson tried to remain unbiased, but we couldn't help putting our own views in when we really had to," MTV Base head Jasmine Dotiwala wrote on her blog.

"Things really got heated when someone declared that So Solid Crew should be in the Top 10. I cracked up!

"I agreed that So Solid beat down doors and brought a never seen before movement to the UK. But a classic album?"

Acts believed to be on the shortlist include Red Hot Chili Pepers, Mariah Carey, Craig David and Take That, according to MusicNews.

"Michael Jackson's Thriller, Nirvana's Nevermind and Radiohead's OK Computer are believed to be nominated over two different lists.
